Given Trent's form so far this season I don't think it's the biggest surprise. Southgate clearly doesn't trust him, he's not really performed well for England even when in Form for Liverpool and England aren't short of decent right backs. I think areas like central defence are more where the questions are.

I don't understand why he keeps selecting him for squads when he clearly doesn't rate him and since Trent is a very attack minded player and as such he clearly doesn't fit Southgates desired style of play .

Yup. Southgate doesn’t like TAA. He isn’t a solid defender and doesn’t fit into a back 5 so not a huge shock. He’s rather Walker trippier who will sit there as a defender rather than someone that will push on and offer a creative outlet.

The uproar if he doesn’t select in the squad is/would be huge though. Think he doesn’t want to have to answer questions on why he’s not selected like when was rumoured wouldn't be in the euros squad.

Southgate doesn't trust him defensively but the point of a back five is top allow more attacking play for the WBs (usually), aka not as responsible defensively

Against Italy the commentators kept saying we were playing 3-4-3 when it was actually mote a flat back 5 or would have been if Saka had any idea what he was meant to be doing .

Normally it is but in a Southgate back 5 it’s 5 defenders.

Thing js don’t get is other than reece James, no one in that defence plays in a back 5 for their club. Saka is a right winger and then shoved at left wing back.

International manager should look who his best players are, and put them into a team and tactic that they are familiar with and work well.

Why copy a system that chelsea use then you only have 2 players from that club who do it.

It’s why the best club managers don’t always make great international ones and visa versa. Best international managers can get a group of players used to playing diff tactics and formations and setting them up in a way they are familiar with and will get the club form out of them.

Not trying to get TAA who is an attacking full back to suddenly play like maldini.

    update on women's game:

A record-breaking crowd of 27,574 - a lot of upper tiers were closed off.

Crowds: a lot of kids in. Families and good proportion of women as well as a heathy amount of male fans.

perhaps early days for this after promotion but it'd be nice to think that at a fiver in we could fill the ground totally in the future. after all... as fsg would say. its the concessions that make the money and kids will want sweets and drinks.

can we please have a match thread for the 1st october v brighton?

    More team news:

salah has been released from egypt squad for "a rest" so will be back with the boys getting ready for birghton

I don't know about TAA I can only assume england will selfishly hold the players "dropped" from the squad so he can watch the game.

yes but the pressure is racking up here. Theres camps of "he can do no wrong" in London but "negative, underacheived, poor, can't manage" is now a common theme in the rest of the country.

If england get hockeyed v the "enemy" then the pressure on the world cup is doubled. Its bad enough he's managed to pick 7 defensive players and get relegated in the nations league but that can be brushed off as a nothing comp.

Losing the germany badly is something that hard to dismiss, just as 0-4 at home to hungary is.

And yes there's a few comments online about grabbing tuchel or pochettino etc for the world cup. a few few idiots who have no idea about team organisation. you are right its "too late" now to sack the guy and change the style but its not too late to have the whole team paralysed by pressure and do even worse.

In that case yes, he can ill afford a bad loss. The morale going into the world cup would be at rock bottom then.

He didn't copy Chelsea's system. Southgate as been in charge since 2016, was before Chelsea played that system.

You're just giving Southgate too much crate really; he plays five at the back because he's stuck in the 90s with his tactics

In the end Saka is down as a forward on the UEFA lists for tonight. He's a right winger imo.

Southgate. oh i know left full back.

Walker never plays back 5 for city. ever. only england do this.

Maguire, it doesn't matter what system he's lost all confidence and falls over the ball or panics.

    James yes RWB

Its no so much for me that one club manager picks a player in one place and the england manager has his own system. Its the fact that its a total negative system where massive shoe horning is going on.

Pope/pickford/henderson (**** on the ground so all hoofed)
Walker - the covid denier at RCB is no issue for me. he's **** but his bit of pace is what gets his poistonal disasters reduced to a manageble level.
Maguire - The slab at LCB - utter disaster zone
Stones - At CB 0 bit crap but whatever. Better that dier anyway.
Tripper at LWB - ffs. only there to take a free.
James at RWB - good player in right slot. Everyone is right he is better defending (which is all southgate wanted) than "won't track trent".
Rice at DM - Blocker. Has lost his form and motivation at west ham and it shows for england imo.
Bellingham at DM. not really a blocker but phillips is injured

now we get 3 forwards max.
Kane - st harry. can do no wrong, bar being as slow as slow can be of course.
Sterling the mercenary, will defend and thats all southgate wants to know
Mount/foden - the choice is who will defend better in southgates mind. One is struggling, the other is likely to be arrested for drinking and womanising at any moment.

Theres a few already talking about low morale here. some just basically commenting.

Henry winter is a times hack (all football writers are hacks) but he is sort of nice to LFC. (and has said we are signing bellingham btw). He's gone for southgate now already.

there's then loads of the sort of engurlund fan who will defend southgate to the hilt til the press tell them to trun and then they will be savage. a bore 0-0 will fend this off til the world cup.

I think southgate needs that draw, knows it and will play very negatively to get it.

A bit like a club only having one senior RB.

    Who'd rather be a midfielder.
