It can't be answered, but to die, means we no longer exist in any form. So I could argue, yes, we do die.
I only think it becomes meaningless when we resort to abuse and mockery people talk about communication being the key, yet when certain ideas or beliefs are communicated there are some who resort to mockery etc questions like the OP are not new, it has troubled many a philosopher/scientist etc I find them interesting any way
When you die that is it for you, you are dead, you cease to exist as you, as an individual. If your drop of consciousness were to live on in the infinite ocean of consciousness, it would do so without the knowledge of a previous identity. Bare that in mind when you think for a second that your life actually mattered.
Surely that could be applied to all of life, in 500 years time we will all be long gone, thats nothing in terms of the universes existence no one will remember us, the world will just go on as it is. Whats the point of this forum, it doesnt really affect our lives in any way.. Okay maybe going to deep ha. I think its a paradox it is meaningless question as theres no answer and yet its one of the most important questions, we are almost born to die, its the one thing we can guarantee, and yet what happens after it is the biggest mystery!
True but does that mean life doesn't matter? why do we have to be able to remember it for it to matter?
No. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of night and scare myself thinking about not existing anymore once I die. Scary ****.
A.J. Ayer can say what he likes - someone asked for opinions from this forum, here they are. If you go by the 'logic' you've just described then half the threads on this forum wouldn't even start. In short, go away.
The part after death doesn't worry me. The idea that we all must go through a dying period is disturbing, however.
It would be comforting to know that he would not come back (even as a slug), nor exist in some ethereal pixie world after his welcome demise. To answer your question, it makes no sense that he is permitted to habitually pollute these boards with filth and hatred, but his view of the world makes no sense to me either.
He's making himself look like a dick on a daily basis, so it doesn't really matter. Hopefully his genitals will fall off so he can't father more thick ****s like him
We are the outstanding species on the planet, we've evolved to live and thrive across the globe and have even managed to haul ourselves out of the earth's orbit. It is in our nature to be curious (no, not that type of curious) and inquisitive, to ask why and search for answers. This has led to progress at an exponential rate but at our core we still doubt the obvious and look for answers in the divine. It is easy to see why we attribute the unexplained to all manner of powers from religion to space aliens but this demeans how advanced we have become and how advanced our ancestors were despite being regarded as primitive. It is a simple thing to wonder, why are we here, what is our purpose, what happens to us when we die etc. But these are all by-products of our intellect and the never ending search for knowledge. Some explain it with religion, others believe in reincarnation, heaven/hell etc. We are both superior and at the same time arrogant as a species. Of course there should be more, it would be a shame to think our lives are a handful of decades with nothing much to show for it, but once the lights are out that is it. Not gone to a better place, not asleep, just dead. Everything else is a figment of our collective imaginations.
