Yeah, they sell pretty much anything eh? Dominates the town that pub.

We stayed in a camp site other side of the train station across the road from there last time I was up there.

Marched the kids and dog up Snowdon!

Looks like Chief spent his flooring money on a variety of alcoholic drinks.
    Genuinely worried about that guy.
Have you noticed that he never posts photos of his ceilings?
    Probably hasn’t got any <peacedove>

So little story for you about our future as a cashless society...

Someone I know went to the States last week, when they went to collect their pre-arranged car hire, they couldn't collect, because the banking systems had gone down. I do actually remember that happening last week, because I tried to transfer some money, and I couldn't because of it, the crash affected several banks, not just those under the same umbrella I believe.

Anyway, they tried to pay on an alternative card, but that got rejected as well, and they couldn't go into the app, to over-ride it, because the systems were down. Despite someone back in the UK, actually talking to the bank on their behalf, they couldn't help either, and they forecast the system will be down for some hours as it was the early hours bank in the UK.

Someone then tried to pay for the stranded person on an alternative card back in the UK, nope couldn't do that, because the card holder had to be present, something to do with the chip and pin in the States.

So only alternative was to catch an Uber to the hotel for the night, and return in the morning. Nope can't catch an Uber either, because it's card payments only. <laugh>

Final idea was to catch a normal cab, which they managed and it cost an arm and a leg.

If that was me, I would defo be seeking some sort of compensation from the bank.

What concerns me about cashless, along with system failure as you’ve mentioned, is deliberate manipulation by financial institutions as directed by police / govt etc. I.e they can switch off your money in an instant if they choose. We’ve already seen massive crackdowns on protest. What if they decide to freeze the bank accounts of anybody protesting against anything they don’t want to see ?

More sinister still is the idea of social credits. We’ve given over nearly all of our financial lives to digital corporations and as with covid we saw the idea of a covid passport being floated. Where you only would be allowed access to certain parts of society if you were vaccinated. The more we give up, the less control we have over our own lives and the more we give to govts.

The idea of your freedom being determined by which app you’ve downloaded and agreed to abide by is a slippery slope into control by stealth imo

Yup and the situation I highlighted was a lot worse than I've even mentioned, In short the person was left in limbo in a foreign land and it seemed like no one gave a shhite, especially the bank, because you are merely engaging with some call handler that is not paid to think outside of the box.

What it says to me, before we go cashless and we seem to be handing it to the companies and banks on a plate, there should be a set of procedures that they have to follow in event of failure - in other words, they are not allowed to say sorry the systems are down, don't work etc, they have to have a back up process in those scenarios.

A bit like in the past where you had voucher and manual wand devices, if the card system went down, where have they gone, that should be the go to process. Just saying sorry there is nothing we can do is not acceptable.

I know that means basing payments on trust, but hey, that's not our problem if you create a system with no back up measures in place.
