And right now publishers are ready to launch publications about the Queen's reign ranging from photos, to multiple biographies, to stories about her meetings with the rich and famous.

Fairplay to David Beckham for joining the queue with the public to pay his respects to the Queen rather than the MP's who just walk straight in. <applause>

The period of National Mourning is traditionally set at 12 days, it's part of our unwritten constitution. There is also a Royal Mourning period for the same time but has been extended for a further 7 days at Charles' request. I would guess that the Queen would have wanted a "proper" period of mourning and funeral because she was all about maintaining the royal family and traditions.
There is absolutely no chance she's been privately buried at Balmoral because St George's Chapel is the place for royal burials* going back many years including the Queen's husband, father, mother and sister.
*She doesn't actually get buried but placed in The Royal Vault. The coffin is supposedly lead lined to stop any unfortunate leaks associated with human decomposition. Another interesting fact is that bodies that haven't been embalmed can swell up and burst, another reason for the lead lining.

The real problem about this whole event is the media's saturation coverage. Because they have chosen to cover it for 24hrs a day (the BBC are streaming live from Westminster Hall day and night ffs) they fill the time with a mix of mind blowingly inane stories and toadying. If people want to camp out for 2 nights or queue for 6 miles that's their choice, it's just another example of the strange (to me) behaviour that this country throws up from time to time. But as I say it's their choice, they would probably think anyone who slept out overnight for a cup final ticket was a bit strange too.

If you think coverage is over the top now, we've still got the funeral yet. I've said before that what I like about living in a monarchy is the pageantry involved and have enjoyed watching the military carry out their duties, and will no doubt watch the funeral for the same reason. The Windsors though, with one or two exceptions, I think are a bunch of weirdos.

An 8km queue is the most British thing I’ve ever heard of… apparently soon there will be a queue to join the queue

It'll be done after Monday though. And frankly, I think we'll all be pretty pleased at that point.

Surely there will then be a highlights programme with celebrities talking about their favourite bits and a slow motion replay of the coffin being dragged through the streets.

If they’re going to do that anyway, wouldn’t it be easier to drag the coffin along the queue, rather than the other way round?

An 8 mile queue would be more British!

Thank you "It's Only a Game" for your informative and thoughtful reply! Perhaps a certain moderator could take a leaf out of your book when replying to posts that people on her put up,but as he is young he may develop the art of writng more considered and measured responses as he matures.

As much as I absolutely detest defending our MPs I actually think you couldn’t ensure their safety in the queue given events over recent times.
