The largest political movement in this country is the conformists. Those who follow what everyone else does. So the saturation media coverage of The Queen’s death, all of it sycophantically pro-monarchy, has got the conformists in a frenzy. Life seems to involve nothing else. What else matters? Some are in such a state of grief they are shedding endless tears. Others are queuing for 24 hours to see a coffin. I’m not anti-monarchist but I don’t overstate their role either. They play some ambassadorial role and The Queen did it very well. But that’s only because most of the rest of the world buy into the fairytale of royalty. Just like kids do with Disney. But The Queen could rarely do any more than go on walkabout, wave and make polite speech, saying nothing meaningful because she wasn’t allowed to. She was an A list celebrity among A listers, but just someone in the public eye at the end of the day, so I don’t get the tears for someone we didn’t know personally. And the effect has been to deflect attention away from an abysmal government taking us into economic crisis, who are content to hide behind the pomp and ceremony, which is used to pretend that Britain is still strong and powerful because of all its associations with Empire. Can’t wait for it all to be over.
Can't say I always agree with him, but I cannot remember a time when his commentary wasn't accurate. This is harrowing!
Talking of which... I see that Handy Andy has been bequeathed the Queen's corgis, which I suppose is reasonable given that he is the most experienced groomer!
