I generally agree with that and I should caveat what I've said in previous posts. Confidence may well come in patches driven by good performance and lack of confidence by bad ones. In Son's case that might well mean that he is likely to play worse than average in the next match because he lacks confidence having had a string of bad matches. The issue for the coach though is how to change that. I am not sure dropping him will make him more confident....more likely the opposite.
You can`t use historical data to predict a players future performance either, a player in previous seasons may well have been fitter, more confident, playing in a better team etc. All you can do is look at a players most recent previous performances and decide who is playing well or not, that`s why you employ a coach / manager, to assess and make decisions.
Michael Owen says that Sonny shouldn't be dropped Kane, Richarlison and Deki to start against Leicester, then...
Perisic wants to get into a good crossing position, have his centre-half overlap to create space and deliver the ball. That doesn't suit Son at all and the lineups we've selected don't really suit Perisic. I think he'd ideally be trying to pick out Richarlison, Kane, Moura and Doherty. Is that in the interests of the team as a whole? Probably not. Might make a good option late on or against sides who are **** in the air. Sessegnon looks for early balls into space or tries to get to the byline and cut it back. Much more Son's speed and probably what we need against sides that play a high line. Kane also needs to alter his game depending on the opposition and our lineup. If we're making chances from elsewhere in the side, then he might stay high. Otherwise he needs to drop deeper and pick out the other forwards more often. He was awful yesterday.
Kane was not fit for the CL final, Lucas 100% should have started the match ahead of him. It was a major mistake by Poch to pick Kane ahead of Lucas for that match.
If Son being dropped makes him sulk and play worse then it just proves the boss is right to drop him.
The problem there is fans and pundits alike would've howled that Kane wasn't starting, and we'd likely be having a similar conversation but with the names changed And the ref would still have been an anatomically ignorant berk...
That's an entirely different argument. What if Kane had been fit? How many matches does Kane get dropped for every time Lucas plays well?
but you will admit that it's good to have some articulate nonsense as opposed to the dumb nonsense we get from our new PM.
As bad as Johnson was whether Truss is any better remains to be seen. All the signs are that she will be a whole lot worse. Anyway it's my fault, but this is not the politics thread so we'd better move on or we will be moved to that thread.
Kane isn't in competition for a place with Lucas normally, though. Managers need to stop rushing him back. On the subject of rushing players back, I think we've done that with Romero. I'm not sure why either, as Sanchez was playing well in his absence.
I was going to touch on this too. I think he's been really poor since his return and hasn’t looked right, he’s been half arsed in a number of tackles which is completely unlike him and he pulled up again last night, wouldn’t be surprised if we find out he played through that injury and misses Leicester now.
Good call. He looked wiped after an hour against Marseille and that was with most of the second half playing against 10 men and them creating very little. Our energy levels improved drastically after Tanganga came on. Romero and Emerson were sent for a hot dog for their second goal; scary how easily the attacker went past him.
Son needs to see it as a challenge and work on being better. Would you tell him he’s undroppable and keep him starting no matter how long he plays poorly?
Whether to drop him or not is a question that is answered only by the person who makes that decision. There is no right or wrong because no one will ever know which is the right course or if it even makes any difference. You can certainly justify dropping him if you think, as you seem to, that he needs to try harder. Even then whether dropping him would increase his work rate surely depends on the individual and you have to be pretty close to Son to know that. You might also drop him to improve the performance of the team. Does the team come before the individual? It should do but we know that in football like life some people are more equal than others. What I think is not right in your comment is Son not trying hard enough and needing to 'work on being better'. If that worked we might not be getting rid of N'dombele. I don't think Son is failing through a lack of a work ethic. The debate IMO is whether Son is just out of form or whether other teams are targetting him for extra attention, or our teams new mix of players and tactics are just not making the most of him? Or a combination of the three, but I don't see any evidence of a lack of effort from Son
