I've nothing to add to this Chilcs, it perfectly sums up my position too. Very touching story about your Grandad too.
I am not a monarchist by any means, but fair play to her, the Queen carried out her duties right to the end. Even though she was on the point of death, she still managed to tell Boris Johnson to **** off. She then clung on for a few more hours to greet Liz Truss the new Prime Minister. When Liz Truss was a Liberal Democrat she said she wanted to abolish the monarchy. The Queen must have thought “**** me, I didn't think she'd take it this far.” In the end she lived to a good old age and died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her family and the son of Major James Hewitt.
I meant to add . Can you imagine what some prime ministers would have been like without the Queen ? Thatcher would have been unbearable .
Can’t argue with this, but I would add that the class system, as a whole, needs to be eradicated. Over the years it has been politically weaponised to divide the working class in an attempt to gain votes for the Tory party. I have raised this point before about the so called middle class. It only exists in the minds of people who want to, for whatever reason, separate themselves from the working class. Those who claim to be middle class , by virtue of earning more than others, having a nice car and a nice home are totally missing the point. It doesn’t matter how much they are earning, when the fact that they are working makes them working class. The class system, which stems from the very top, is too divisive and needs to be ended, starting with the monarchy.
I’ve put a tweet on Politics by the excellent Abby Heffer discussing the reaction to the death of the Queen by the striking unions and even Extinction Rebellion and how this is likely to be exploited. It’s too political for this thread.
It’s a very complicated question. I’ve always been a republican as I fundamentally disagree with anyone having a birthright that places them above anyone else. That is an opinion that I still feel strongly about. But on the other hand, as I get older, I too absolutely love the ceremony and the rituals and everything about the big occasions. I also really feel that the country is massively lacking things that bring us together. Technology and evolving trends in society mean that everyone is becoming more disconnected than ever (paradoxically - in the time when technology connects us like never before.. it feels like we are all growing apart.) It’s no exaggeration to say that our nation was built on Christianity and the monarchy. As much as I disagree with both of these ideas, I feel that to disregard then completely could easily lead us into a much worse society than the one we are used to. If we are going to bin these fundamental ideas off altogether then they need to be replaced by something. Nietzsche had it right when he talked about the Death of God. That same idea can be applied to the Death of the monarchy
It’s an interesting debate. At heart I’m a republican, yet in the flip side I fear what happens when countries lose their national identity, and, like it or not, ours is wrapped up in the royal family. Enjoying reading the posts though.
I used to be for a Republic, but the older I have got the more I have appreciated the monarchy, so now I would call myself a Royalist. I don't agree fundamentaly with privilege by birth, but to me what the Queen did was modernise the monarchy and for all the privilege she had from her birth line, she gave back in duty to the country and the other immediate Royals (don't want to include Andrew in that) with their tireless work for charity and for the country. The King/Queen is largely a symbolic head of state for us and it is a symbol that gives us as a nation identity and frankly makes me proud to be British.
Absolutely! It makes us very unique, whether it’s liked or disliked & I believe most around the world, are envious (although I accept there’s a lot who will disagree).
mmmmm bit mischievous L & O but poses a question for the royalists. What would have happened if Harry was older than William? Would the palace have DNA tested him to determine his parentage to find out who it was (see what I did there) and would they have sanctioned him marrying Megan.
Anyone else watching the new Lord of the Rings series on Prime? I started watching it last night and have now watched all 3 episodes that have been released and am really enjoying it. It's completely different from the films and as a series of 8 episodes you don't have to squeeze things in to a 2-3 hour time frame.
Yes I’m enjoying it too. Having read the Silmarillion and a few of the other “history” books I was a bit confused at first, as all the timelines seemed to be a bit mixed up. But everything started to make more sense with Episode 3. I love the way Galadriel is being used as the central figure to draw all the different strands together, and I’m definitely warming to the Harfoots, even if the Irish accents are a bit bizarre.
Watching HOTD first and then will watch LOTR once that’s over. Have heard good things so looking forward to it!
