Premier League and English Football League games called off following death of Queen Elizabeth II - BBC Sport
Yep. I am against this decision to be honest. It would have been far greater respect if the anthem was sung followed by 2 minute silence by thousands at each ground around the country instead of people now be stuck at home doing nothing or go out using trains or buses - which won't be closing out of respect, or driving and maybe needing petrol at the pumps - which won't be closing out of respect, while going to the shops or cinema - which won't be closing out of respect. Yet football has to stop. And all those who have paid for transport that cannot be refunded and paid for hotels that cannot be refunded - will lose out on money which is a smack in the mouth while we are in a cost of living crisis. Some fans from other clubs have already got flights to the UK now for no reason. I seen a few people who supports Arsenal fly from Canada costing them thousands with flights, hotel and matchday tickets etc. They can get a refund for their matchday ticket but they have lost out on thousands getting to and staying in the UK. No consideration shown to the fans. Watch this clip. Surely this would have been a great mark of respect shown. West Ham on the evening after the Queens passing...
I agree, especially as the Test Match and rugby league are still on. I can understand Friday’s matches being cancelled but I’m not convinced of the necessity of postponing the whole weekend’s action. With mourning going on up to the funeral (which will be after next weekend) does that mean we have no fixtures next weekend too?
Apparently other sports going ahead because there are no alternative dates to fit them in so needs to be played. Whereas footbal games can be rescheduled anytime. Could even extend the season if needs must. So I get other sports playing but still makes no sense to stop football when life goes on and respect could be showed up and down the country like that West Ham clip instead of cost a lot of fans money that they can't get back.
I kind of understand but still not needed, especially when you still had Man Utd, Arsenal and West Ham play on the same day as she died. If any football were to be cancelled, surely the same day would have been cancelled.
I can see why the people at the top of the EFL and the Premiership felt they needed to do something to show respect, but feel they got this wrong by cancelling everything the way they did. As has already been stated, there are far less disruptive ways that the game could show reverence and respect to the Royal Family, and a unified show of regret and support at every ground in the country would, I feel, be a lot more supportive and less of a disruption for everyone concerned. Still, it is what it is, but I do think they got it wrong!
Football restarts tomorrow so I assume there will be the full schedule of fixtures. I missed watching footy this weekend - on the plus side I didn't have to drive my sons to different ends of Gloucestershire on both days of the weekend to play for their teams!
While I agree that most football fans would show respect there was obscene chanting at the Hearts match and abusive chanting in an Irish football match possibly Shamrock Rovers ??? game. unfortunately some people will not show respect if it doesn't agree with their beliefs.
