It shouldnt need qualifications to work your way up to the top though.

I know of several brilliant people in my specialist area that are head and shoulders above a 'degree' qualified person but won't be considered for the top jobs as they don't have a bit of paper

I think my 3 years at university were very well spent, drinking playing sport and getting my leg-over at every available opportunity. I quite understand G Best's quote.

Back in the day, I got a grant otherwise I couldn't have gone as my family didn't have two pennies to rub together. I worked usually pot-hole filing for the local council during the vacs.

I reckon having to take out a loan would have give second thoughts about going to university.
I would not have been offered my first job if I didn't have a degree.

It's a pointless apology apart from a pathetic attempt to save his earnings.

Yeah the "sorry that you were offended by what I said" apologies don't mean a thing.

I suppose, like my wife who is into gardening etc, usually calls plants by their Latin name, rather than as she puts it, their common or nick name.
During the WW1 the Royal family adopted a common/nick name but their proper name is i understand it was never formally changed.

Although after Diana and now Kate the germania heritage is diluted.

Aye but if you can do something well and people se rot and you can explain how and why you did it why do you have to write it down to get a qualification. If those skills were certificated some things would rebalance.

Should his livelihood be threatened though because he said something that, though many find distasteful, was not illegal or criminal in any way?

I understand why cancel culture exists when it comes to "hate speech", though many disagree with it. I struggle to see an argument to marginalise people who disagree with the mainstream though.

Do you think this is significantly different to "people looking for anything to get offended over" which you suggested was happening regarding your post a couple of days ago?

Yeah I agree with that. Ironically there’s been a lot of ‘virtue signalling’ and ‘snowflaking’ in the last few days.

Is his original tweet not considered "hate speech"

As I have said many times, I don't see the offence in the photo

It’s based on protected characteristics so technically no. Arguably you could go down the public order route but a solicitor would rip it to shreds and surely it would be classed by the new administration as woke policing.

So if I go stand outside Durham council offices complaining about back or brown people that wouldn't be construed as "hate speech"?

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. But people cannot complain that they have no chances in life when they have been offered, and not seen any value in, a free primary and secondary education.

I think people should be appointed to any job on the basis of their aptitude for it. I find it strange that they should held back on the basis of what school that they went to.

I wouldn't say it was "hate speech", no. Disrespectful and distasteful yes, but he's not inciting hatred or promoting violence of any kind.

Just because you don't see anything offensive in the photo, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Just as Trevor Sinclair may not have intended his tweet to be as offensive as it was taken by some people.

I'm just trying to understand the contradiction, as I see it, between having a problem with "people looking to be offended" in one situation and then being offended by another. To me, it seems like the only difference is that you're offended by one thing (so you think offence is justified) and you're not offended by the other (so you see any "offended" people as "looking for it").

Really wish I hadn't posted that image or commented on that tweet.

Think it's safe to say I agree to disagree on both

Possibly yes because race is a protected characteristic. He wasn’t really targeting her because of her race I don’t think was he ? Maybe he was. I think it was because of what English people did to other races and cultures during the empire. Might be wrong on that.
