I am surprised that the BBC have cancelled Last Night of the Proms. Personally I cannot stand the the programme , but.itwould be ideal for those that wish to join those idiotic. ,not really patriotic knobheads, waving their union flag and bobbing up and down, it would be the most appropriate broadcast they could put out.. I always switch back on for MoTD,but that had been stolen from me this year.
That's an interesting viewpoint, clearly it would have been problematic to have Edward VIII on the throne as we approached WW2. I also understand he was a total smeghead. However, as a constitutional monarch he had no power to dictate policy, nor is there any evidence that he influenced the government toward the German point of view while he was reigning. Indeed, should he have attempted to do so I suspect it would have caused a constitutional crisis that might have seriously damaged or destroyed the monarchy. But it didn't happen and we ended up with a couple of (relatively) enlightened monarchs afterward, and now Charles who appears to be (again relatively) progressive. Let us not forget that he was also years ahead of his time on climate and green issues. And as a democrat I honestly understand your desire to have an elected head of state and elected upper house (which is what I am assuming you are suggesting). But I am also very persuaded by the potential disaster area that such a system might create when we look at the States. Of course you can point to other countries where it works, but it seems that in many areas where we probably shouldn't, we follow the example of the States rather than more sensible countries.
I also don't think it should have been cancelled. I suspect that if someone had asked the Queen what her views on the matter were, while they still could, from what we know of her she would probably have wanted it to go ahead. I also think the football should have gone ahead at the weekend (not that avoiding Man City for a while isn't probably a good thing), though not today. As the FSA said, you could have a minute silence at the grounds, which is actually a more obvious sign of respect than not playing at all.
This can be quite short I refer to my reply. The point is not the outcomes of a system that you project on dubious evidence but the system itself. If you anylise the voting habits of the British public and project no change on a proportional system neither the Tories or Labour in their present form would win. There would be a hung parliament (as it is poorly described) This is a sysytem that resides in the best governed countries in Europe ie Germany and Scandinavia.
I've always been a supporter of PR! Incidentally I was listening to our former leader Teresa Green (or May or whatever) on Radio 4 earlier. The odd thing is that having heard rather a lot of Liz Truss recently, Teresa May sounds far more statesmanlike than she used to! What a sad indictment.
We came ****ing close to having Edward as King and Chamberlain as prime minister. That's appeasement almost guaranteed in 1940, if not before. The fact that Edward gave away the crown isn't any form of constitutional protection, it's just dumb ****ing luck. What if Andrew had been Elizabeth's first born or Harry was Diana's? We are handed the Head of State via a form of genetic Russian roulette from a family who serve up a wrong 'un pretty regularly. I want parliamentarians in both houses who are elected (preferably representative of the whole nation's intent) and a figure head who doesn't get it as their birthright and can be removed by constitutional means, if necessary. The current nonsense may have passed muster a couple of centuries ago, but not any more.
As a union rep you have a target on your back at all times, you would laugh at some of the trumped up charges I've had leveled against me , but one of the best things my union has is an education dept where as my company pick a manager quite often by the length of his tongue, lack of spine and if he owns a tie
The good news is that countries across the world are questioning why they should continue with the descendents of, 'A monarch from a racist empire built on stolen lives and wealth of colonised people.' A quote from Senator Mehreen Ferqi of the Australian Parliament. She could also question her support for a religious movement if she hasn't already. So many human beings seem unable to cope with the condition of being human without the props of 'leaders' and religion. A permanent state of childhood seems to envelope more than half of the human race. It wouldn't matter so much if these religions and leaders were benign forces for good but sadly they are mostly self serving power grabbing institutions.
Liz Truss calls British workers lazy, then gives herself a ten day holiday to "mourn" while the rest of us go back to work - but we're forbidden to watch football
How apt that we have a leader called Truss. A mechanism of support. Shame she didn't just stick to being a stick of wood holding up a roof.
