You may not like punk music (and I support your right not to do so), but it was possibly the only music (possibly the only popular media) to really address this issue and pull no punches at all... God save the queen The fascist regime They made you a moron A potential H bomb God save the queen She's not a human being and There's no future And England's dreaming Don't be told what you want Don't be told what you need There's no future No future No future for you God save the queen We mean it man We love our queen God saves God save the queen 'Cause tourists are money And our figurehead Is not what she seems Oh God save history God save your mad parade Oh Lord God have mercy All crimes are paid Oh when there's no future How can there be sin We're the flowers In the dustbin We're the poison In your human machine We're the future Your future God save the queen We mean it man We love our queen God saves God save the queen We mean it man There's no future In England's dreaming God save the queen No future No future No future for you No future No future No future for me No future No future No future for you In 1977, in Jubilee week, it outsold the second most popular single by a factor of 3:1, despite being banned from the airwaves and most venues refusing to honour contracts to let the band play. It never reached no. 1 on the official chart, because we live in the fascist state that the song claims...and it put the wind up those who hold power in this country and offered an alternate outlook that they despised. They called it "God saves..." and pretended that Rod Stewart's 'I Don't Want To Talk About It/The First Cut Is The Deepest' outsold it. 45 years on, it remains the greatest piece of popular music produced by this country...
I am the admin for a union based chat group, third world war broke out last night on line over her demise, it's got to the point where I've just found out that someone has reported me to HR and my balls could be on the block even though I tried to defuse the situation by withdrawing some of the more vocal members from the chat , what a ****ing mess
On a number of levels, I'm sorry to hear it. I hope you're not too badly affected by having to step in. Once our new Fuhrer repeals the Human Rights Act, particularly Article 10...
Last night, at about 7.30 pm, when I was cooking dinner and was interested in the football being played, they had Piers Morgan and a former editor of The Evening Standard spouting the biggest load of bollocks that I've ever heard. If anyone wants to know why people want rid of this monarchy, this is a good place to start.
On a personal level, I admired the Queen. But I’m strictly an anti-monarchist and anti establishment (despite previously being a civil servant for 20 years). I only stream TV shows thus can avoid all the glib on TV for the next few weeks. I’ve turned the radio off in the car as I don’t want to listen to James Blunt and Adele. People are free to choose to grieve or not. But why the heck are they considering scrapping football matches? The scheduling this season surely leaves no room for cancellations. Looks like there’s going to be a bank holiday or day of mourning for the funeral so I’m not going to be able to work (self employed) and will lose a day’s pay. Day 1 and I’m sick of it already!
And I’m glad I’m not in the Civil Service anymore. I would have had a meltdown on being given guidance on what to wear for the next few weeks!
There's a reason that I like to remain anonymous on here! What are they intending to report you for, anyway? Moderation?
Like many heroes, mostly he's now an extremely annoying, detestable prick. I make no defence for that...but it doesn't lessen his achievements as a young man. If I wondered what my 15 year old self would make of me 45 years later....I doubt that it would be good.
My family came to this country before the first world war fleeing religious persecution. My grandfather fought in that war, my father in the second. Later I also served and many decades ago took this oath: please log in to view this image Most of you by your comments would regard such a commitment as ridiculous and out of time. Personally I have never forgotten the debt that my family owes this country. I also happen to think that a constitutional monarchy is a much better political system than it has any right to be, given the excesses of the presidential system in some countries. So excuse me if I happen to mourn the loss of the head of state. Long live the King.
I will restrain myself and just say welcome to the the country that raped and pillaged one third of the world. If you wish to be part of that, and clearly you do you'll have to forgive my complete lack of respect for your position and any religion that you have been incorporated into.
Terrible news for the makers of Stranger Things: now if you boot up Netflix you're going to get railroaded towards The Crown
