I have nothing against Brighton, in fact I quite admire them. I have some sympathy for their fans if he does go. For years they have wallowed around in the lower divisions and just when they look like becoming a very decent PL side it could all disintegrate. We know that feeling all too well.

    Plus their pies are excellent.

Fans are clearly a little naive though. Both on Cucurella and now Potter. It first became apparent with the Cucurella situation

And I do mean naive rather than optimistic / positive

I just heard on the athletic that apparently Chelsea were annoyed with Brighton over their stance on the Cucurella deal and it almost cost them Gilmour

I’m not sure why though? Because they insisted on a price and refused to budge? Or something else behind the scenes? Seems strange. Surely it can’t be solely hard ball over price

If he does go (which looks likely) I wonder how many would follow next summer, not to Chelsea, but leaving because of Potter.

They probably haven't experienced this sort of thing much before if at all. Remember how Saints fans thought a lot of our players and managers wouldn't leave because.......(insert your reason of choice - family, living in the south, Saints fan, loved by the fans and so on) until it happened a few times and now we are realistic when it comes to people leaving.
I can remember Brighton fans on the BBC HYS moaning about Potter in his early days. There's always a good mix of fans at every club though from the cynics to happy clappers to the downright swivel eyed loons*.

    * I love that expression but up till now have unsuccessfully found an opportunity to use it. Yay

There is pretty good excuse to use that term but that is for the off topic thread

I appreciate your point but you would think they would just need to look over high profile examples like ours and reflect. But there didn’t seem to be an ounce of that. When Cucurella was linked with Man City they really thought they could keep him. The champions wanted him. Granted they played hard ball to the extent that he didn’t go there but they pissed him off royally in the meantime and made his departure inevitable.

Leicester seemed to do the same with Fofana. And Rodgers should have a much closer understanding of being in that kind of situation since he was chief perpetrator when it happened to us - but as I posted before he has clearly not reflected on that at all

Brighton were not helped by a very good start and loads of fawning articles and podcasts about them “selling their best players and getting better” (which people quickly forget that we did under Koeman at least in terms of results)

I'm not disagreeing with you (you probably know more Brighton fans than I do, I don't know any) just saying rational thinking is not always common among football fans.

I didn’t think you were. And agree that is how football fans behave

Their response to this is extra weird given the Cucurella situation only a few months ago

But I am sure we were the same at times given how long the sales went on for

I’m only really going on online Brighton fans but those aren’t going to be the best population to pick from. Especially the tweets in response to the Cucurella to City links. Truly divorced from reality

I know quite a few Brighton fans, having lived there for 22 years - they're retaining a faint glimmer of hope, but are actually pretty sanguine about it. They knew this was coming eventually.

Yeah so predictably it is just the online outliers who are not being overly realistic about the whole situation

    Which makes sense

Their next appointment is very important though as Potter really did seem to have them playing at a lot more than the sum of their parts

I just realised - think how many people will have lost money betting on Rodgers being the next manager out

Holy ****. Just signed on and looked at football news.

Chelseas management have been reading LTL’s forum posts. Potter must be a top 5 manager <laugh>.

Seems an insane decision to sack Tuchel to me.

If the new Chelsea manager is required to agree to them signing Ronaldo in January then maybe Potter might say no after all ?

Chelsea potentially triggering Potter’s buyout clause and messing Brighton over 6 games into the season. Makes me hope all of our buy-back clauses are only trigger-able for the early stages of any transfer window to avoid City and Chelsea bringing all their boys back at the end of the window.

Crazy how comparatively little a manager transfers for than a player.

Potter is so much more important to Brighton than Cucurella ever was or would have been

If Potter is offered the job and accepts it , then good it’s about time one our own was given a chance at the top , having worked in the same league for a while .
