Thats what the golden boot is for. And then noone but players playing up front can win it? If keeper ahs 40 clean sheets but no goals scored he doesn't deserve it?

Anyways. Rooney, no chance, Nani, even less, 8 Barca players nominated, why, Only Barca won away last night 0 4 when Chelsea and the mighty:) arsenal also drew, Barca and their players are just that good, the team is just that good. Xavi 1st Messi 2nd who cares who's third:)

Don't know how they decide who wins it but would Suarez have a chance after his performance in the Copa?

That's why I'm saying it shouldn't be Ronaldo. Yes, he has scored lots of goals but I believe that trophies won does play a part. But having said that, again I ask, why didn't Sneijder win it in 2010? Makes no sense to me whatsoever. It's a popularity contest. When the likes of Sniejder and Vidic haven't had a mention for unbelievable performances in all competitions and in the WC as well for Wesley, I stopped paying attention years ago. Even when Ronaldo won it in 2008 when he was at United.

I think it's voted for by international coaches, captains and journos from around the world. So I doubt he'll have any chance to make the final three after Barca's performance (and the media love in they had) last year. The South American media and coaches / captains might have pushed him into the top three on the basis of the Copa, but I'd be 99% certain they'll almost all vote Messi.

Wayne wont win it this year. Messi will win it but I have absolutely no doubts that this phenomenon (Wayne Rooney) will win the prestigous Ballon D'Or atleast once or twice before his career finishes. Lionel Messi is very lucky because he plays with really wonderful midfielders at Barcelona where he is allowed to flourish. In the Champions League final Wayne had to lead the attack against Barcelona all on his own and that goal he scored was created by him and scored by him. He virtually took on Barcelona on his own. Messi for Argentina is very poor. If Wayne was supported by Xavi/Iniesta type then he would flourish just as well as Messi.

Its just a matter of time regarding Wayne Rooney being Ballon d'or winner. I wouldent be suprised if he goes through a period where he is world player of the year for many years running like Platini was in the 1980's. Platini was 27/28 when he won his first ballon d'or upstaging the likes of Rummenigge, Zico, Socrates, Dalglish, Maradona and Socrates.

Waynes a phenomenal player and a really nice person and its only a matter of time before we all talk about him as indeed being not only one of the best footballers in the world but the best and that means even better than Messi because he has all the attributes and raw talents that are better than Messi

im bored of messi, ronaldos smashing records like no other player ever.

100 goals in 105 games? makes Messi rate of 200 in 286 games look rather ****.

Yeah, add Messi's appearances from when he was just starting to play first team football <facepalm>

Messi has 122 goals in the past 3 seasons while Cronaldo has 100.

EDIT: Just, looking at full club careers:

    Cronaldo - 428 Games 223 Goals
    Messi - 316 Games 213 Goals

I presume Cronaldo has more goals but Messi more assists. Both aren't great for their country by their extremely high club standards

Messi does have 3 goals 10 assists mind this international season.

    Better than Messi ?

Ask most Utd fans if they'd swap Rooney for Messi and I think you'd find your answer.

Actually Rooney is the only United player I wouldn't swap for Messi, or Ronaldo. That's not to say rooney is better than those two, he's not, but Rooney has proven to be the heartbeat of this United team for the past few years and and he continues to provide the imputus for us to continue winning regardless of who's playing with him, Ronaldo or no Ronaldo etc. I'd love to have Messi or to have Ronaldo back, but I wouldn't want to lose Rooney in the process.
