Good Morning. It's Monday 5th September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road Brentford smash five past Leeds The Whites recent miserable form continued as Brentford smashed five past them, and Jesse Marsch was sent off as Leeds slipped to 10th in the table. Any hopes that Leeds could replicate the victory they achieved on the final day of last season were dashed after half an hour, after Rob Jones (referee) awarded Brentford a spot kick, following Luis Sinisterra's challenge on Ivan Toney. Many believed the Columbian deserved the benefit of the doubt, especially as it took VAR the best part of five minutes to direct Jones to the monitor. Customary when referred to the screen, the man in black pointed to the spot, and Toney duly obliged. They doubled their lead a few minutes before half-time after Leeds gave away one of many cheap free kicks in striking distance to Meslier's goal. Once again Toney punished the Whites, delivering his strike with pin-point accuracy into the top right corner. In truth Leeds wall was a shambles, amplified by the fact that Tyler Adams moved out of the firing line. Leeds' response was instantaneous. Sinsterra's low hard drive from the edge of the 'D' wrong footing David Raya in the second minute of first half injury time to reduce the deficit to one, at the break. In a brave attempt to salvage something from the game, Marsch bought on Bamford at half-time at the expense of Jack Harrison. Both teams had good chances in the early exchanges of the second half, but it would be Brentford that would register first. Jensen launched a speculative long ball into the Leeds half. It bounced over Llorente (somehow) after getting in a muddle with Koch, and into the pathway of Lewis-Potter. Whilst Koch sprinted after him, a dejected Llorente gave up, deciding to stay put. Fortunately for Leeds, Meslier was alert to the danger, and raced out of his box. The French shot stopper made an incredible block, but the ball fell kindly for Toney who floated the ball over the Leeds defenders to register his hat trick. Soon after, Summerville was bundled over in the box, and Jones waved play on. An incensed Jesse Marsch saw red (literally), and was sent to the stands. Two goals up, Brentford took their foot off the gas, and alowed Leeds back into the game. Bamford and Roca both missed guilt edged opportunities to get back into the game before Roca finally made one count. 30 seconds later, the Bee's once again had their two goal cushion. Janson's long ball was flicked on by Toney, then Koch into the path of Mbeumo. He took a touch before firing home from 15 yards. A miserable afternoon was concluded when Wissa robbed Llorente of the ball, before calmly slotting the ball home. please log in to view this image That lack of VAR visit is a lack of respect An incensed Jesse Marsch took a swipe at VAR during his post match interview on Saturday. The Leeds gaffer explained that he thought the decision not to review Summerville's incident was disrespectful towards his team, especially as having reviewed the first half penalty, he didn't believe it was 'clear and obvious'. According to Marsch:- “I was speaking with the fourth official, trying to be as respectful as I possibly could. Even when a penalty was given that I probably didn’t think was a penalty and then when you don’t see it reciprocated, it’s the respect. That lack of VAR visit is a lack of respect in the end. “I was calm even when Brentford were given the penalty, even though I didn’t see it right away, but normally when the phrasing is ‘clear and obvious’ and it takes that long to watch it and look at it then for me, it’s not clear and obvious. “When I saw it at half-time, I didn’t believe it’s a penalty and if it is, it’s an incredibly soft one. I was told by the referee committee and the league in our managers’ meeting before the season started that the threshold for penalties was going to go up so that was not, for me, represented by that decision. “Then there’s an action where I think Summerville is actually more of an egregious foul and it doesn’t even get looked at for VAR, I’m clearly dissatisfied. I’ve got to figure out how to have discussions with the league or with referees to help understand how some decisions get made.” please log in to view this image If we needed to add something that we needed to move something The decision to loan out Dan James to Fulham was explained during Jesse Marsch's post match presser at Brentford. The 24yo joined the Cottager's on a season long loan, with the view of a permanent deal if all goes well. According to Marsch, it was a one in - one out scenario, and had more to do with the balance of the team, than monetary reasons. “Yeah, it was clear that if we needed to add something that we needed to move something. I hate speaking about it that way because I love Dan James, he's an incredible person and he gives everything to the group always." “When we were trying to think about how to get the balance right in the team, this was the key was garnering the most interest and it was the only way that we could create flexibility to try and go out and add a striker position that we felt we needed. So I wish that we wouldn't have had to do it and even the way that it went down because it was kind of tough for Dan." please log in to view this image
Good Morning fro0m acool Bardsey I bet Or5ta wish he would have bought Ivan Toney what was he quoted 30mk Ibelieve how much is he worth now?
Morning all the positives out of that were we played them off the park and dominated possession for much of the game. The negatives were we get overrun we lose the ball, Llorente was shocking, the ref was shocking an iffy penalty awarded to them and a nailed on penalty not even viewed on VAR. We didnt deserve 5 going past us but we wasted chances. Pointless having the ball all game if you cant score. Same old problems, Bamford not at it, Joffy unlucky. And how about the number if injuries we are picking up in training again? What happened to the form we showed against Chelsea, it needs sorting with a big stick this week Marsch otherwise he is danger of joining Rodgers, Gerrard in the sack race
I’m not knocking Toney it was a great free kick, he hit the bar with another one and it was really good vision and execution to chip the defender for his hat-trick. Fair play to the guy. But I think it’s his first direct free kick goal for Brentford and sinisterra has scored as many from outside the box for Leeds as Toney has for Brentford. Toney just had a day in the sun... sods law it had to be against us. Really, he’s a physical handful and a bit of an old school centre forward, and a very decent one. We got done route one yesterday from speculative hoofs forward.
Devils advocate, but I would have reacted like Marsch. Not because I lost my cool, but if the referee knows he's gonna get a hard time if he gets it wrong, he could be less likely to make the call in future games. A case in point was Alex Fergeson. He was always 'taking one for the team...
This makes sense of how bad refereeing is in this country if its true what Halsey is quoted as saying
I agree. If its a choice between Bielsas quiet approach to bad referee decisions or Jesses, I far prefer Jesses. Before anyone dives in that's not meant as a criticism of Bielsa
I'd have reacted like Marsch because in the heat of the moment i'd have been livid. I'm still livid now. I'm fine with him showing emotion and letting people know what he thinks. He seems like a nice guy off the pitch but a fierce competitor once the whistle blows. I'm good with that, though he may have to rein it in if his red card collection impacts his ability to do his job. Bielsa's refusal to blame refs was commendable on a moral level but didn't seem to increase our chances of getting the next decision. If we're not going to get any favours either way, you might as well have the satisfaction of telling the cnuts to go fck themselves
Wonder if Marsch would’ve allowed Villa to walk the ball into the goal doubt it somehow More likely he’d have kicked the **** out of John Terry and Dean Smith
Problem is that after Jesse's words we're probably now less likely to get those 50/50 calls. At least under Bielsa we were actually awarded some penalties. Don't blame Jesse for having a go but unless you're Klopp or Fergie then you get f*ck all from the officials for complaining, and stating that bending the refs ear could influence the next decision was an amazingly stupid thing to state publicly.
Yeh thanks for highlighting my ****ty spelling ya c***t. It's jet lag ok so f**k off. I'm liking this new Jesse way of expressing oneself
Once a Manager has a go like that, the referee is in the limelight, where it be back page headlines or Match of The Day. In my opinion, Marsch complaining can only be a good thing, as the ref will always think twice next time.
Our last season in the Championship saw us wait a record number of games before winning a penalty. The fairly accurate stat used shows on average a penalty is awarded to a team every 4 games. Leeds went 18 games for the 20/21 season Leicester got 12 penalties awarded Man Utd got 11 Chelsea got 10 City 9 BHA 9 Leeds right down the league with 4 21/22 Chelsea 9 City 9 Arsenal 8 Palace 8 BHA 7 Leeds down the table with 5 The thing that stands out for me is the top teams seem to get more and Brighton and Palace getting a lot more than Leeds which sort of explains how if Leeds had had a couple more pens last season that may have been 6 more points and not in the shyt at the end of the season, those 6 points would have seen us way comfortable
