Disappointing day today. But let me cheer you up - Hull City is entering it's fourth period of high attendances. City's gates, going right back to our first League campaign in 1905/06 season, have rarely got much above 10,000 average across a League season. There are three exceptions: 1. The immediate post-war boom between 1946 and around 1957, with a brief revival for the promotion season in 1958/59 and the year after. This was fuelled by incredible investment in the City team - England internationals in the manager's seat, the defensive line and the forward line. 2. The mid-1960s when City built a squad to challenge for promotion to Division Two and beyond, fuelled by investment in the team. Ken Wagstaff was signed for £40,000, in today's money that's nearly £1m - imagien if Oxford United spent that kind of money last week on one striker. Promotion was won in 1966 and Cliff Britton's side flirted with the top half of the Second Division table but never sustained a promotion challenge. Gates had dipped by 1970 to under 12,000, then had a brief spike when the club invested in Terry Neill's first season, when the Tigers got as close to the First Division as they had for several decades. 3. The 2000s and 2010s when the Council invested in the stadium and the club, fuelled by Peter Wilkinson's funding of Adam Pearson, soared through the divisions then used money it didn't have to mount a first ever charge on the Premier League. These gates sustained until the late 2010s when the Allams decided to stop investing in the club. And now we have a fourth era of high crowds - gates this season are already averaging 18,000, and were over 14,000 from the moment the new owner took on the club. The increase is fuelled by Acun Ilicali's investment in the squad and the general feel-good factor that he has engendered. So don't listen to the bores who wiffle on about population statistics, rugby league and other fripperies. If you want big gates at Hull City, invest in the squad - history clearly demonstrates the Hull public will react positively every time**. ** the one exception being Don Robinson's squad investment in the 1980s - but the general horror of attending football at that time, with dozy twats scrapping every week and fans caged in like circus animals as a result, put many people off.
Could we argue the Oscar chance was the luck of the bounce in a tackle that we broke away, not sure how tufan chance came about. I don’t remember us breaking them down or dominating them, just little breakaways
We never dominated your right, the Oscar chance came from us playing and pressing quickly, which put us in the position to capitalise on the lucky bounce from the tackle imo. The tufan chance and the longman chance in the second half also came from us moving things a little quicker. Playing / breaking quickly against them is probably the best way to play against them this season
Their midfield and the high press made up for a pretty average defence. If we could've transitioned the ball quicker and won some of the midfield battles we could've nabbed a result. Their midfield with Berge though is a step above this league
There was also one that got flagged as ‘well offside’ that was in fact on. Similar to Smith midweek but, clearly definitely on.
Watching the brief blades biased highlights there and we had 2 guilt edged chances to score and Ingram really should be saving that first effort
Thought they looked very comfortable, and just contained us. I think they had a couple of gears they could have moved up had they needed to, but we just didn't have the creativity to get past that high press. Shame really. I mentioned after the 1st game of the season (might have been been a pre season game), playing out from the back is gonna cause us more issues than it causes the opposition and its ringing true. I also said that if we can't play on the counter we could struggle against teams who sit...that is what we are going to face the next few weeks, so will be interesting to see how we overcome that
What this game showed was a team that has largely been playing together for 1 year + and a team that has just been assembled. It staggers me there are some people online calling for Shota's head, they clearly know nothing about football or are just WUM. Even though they were the better side we restricted them to a few chances, but the ones they had they capitalised on. We had equally as many chances as they had, and as Shota said they scored at the right time and we failed to score at the right time. I thought Oscar had a good game even though he missed a golden opportunity to score. Tufan looked rusty another few games under his belt he would have scored his chance. Slater, I thought played well, Wood just didn't quite do enough and both Elder and Greaves were good. Figgy needs taking out, he looks short on confidence, I would bring McLoughlin in for the next game. Ingram should have saved their first goal, when a keeper goes to save it with both hands then he thinks he has enough time to get to the ball or it would have been a one-handed save. He misjudged it, so it has to go down as an error on his part. Pelkas looks a real player, I just looked forward to the day he, Tufan and Seri are playing regularly on the same pitch. We are a team at the start of a massive overhaul, it will take time for all the pieces of the jigsaw to fit together. Just keep the faith, I suspect after the world cup, as long as we get a fair crack of the whip with injuries we will start to see the team really gel.
Exactly! Coulda, but wasn’t, maybe if Oscar scores, we get something, or maybe they move up a gear & still win.
