Okay, not football related although he was a staunch Wycombe fan and commentated on their games. Diagnosed with prostate cancer 6 years or so ago he worked tirelessly to make others aware of the deadly condition and probably saved the lives of thousands of men by encouraging early examination, diagnosis and treatment. I remember him as one of the mainstays of BBC Breakfast TV with his calm, unflustered and balanced reporting and interviewing style. Also far from full of self importance and not afraid to take the p**s out of himself. RIP Bill.
Just saw that on the news. Seemed to have been around for ever. Another of those interviewers who asked the difficult questions and was politely tenacious. A genuine reporter, not a celebrity or 'front'.
Very sad news. Prostrate cancer runs in my family. My father died from it and I was diagnosed with it 7 years ago. I must admit it was a bit of a shock when I was told but so far I’m one of the lucky ones as the cancer hasn’t spread outside of the prostrate. I am indebted to the consultants, doctors, nurses and all the staff at the Heath hospital who have been absolutely brilliant with my care. Can I encourage all you guys on here, if you haven’t done so, get the test. It’s a simple PSA blood test which can be booked through your GP. Don’t put it off please!
Cheers Remote. I am constantly telling any male over the age of 50 to get their prostrate checked and I do keep on at it! And I’ll continue to do so!!
Very sad I’m sure for his family & friends but is it right to be the headline on the BBC news at 6 with other world & UK events going on?
Sure and I reiterate my sympathies etc but have a special programme or make a documentary about it - the News at 6 is a news programme and this should have been a footnote.
If you went down that route, Ukraine, fuel / energy prices, cost of living crisis, Pakistan flooding would be the only headline for months. Gorbachev, Turnbull and myriad other stories will be transient headlines. I dont need to be told about the former, I hear it every day. We shouldn't blank out other noteworthy headlines because of them.
A clean puncher with fast hands for a heavyweight. Also a great variety of punches delivered in bunches. Not big by today's standards, but could dig a bit. RIP.
I didn’t state ‘blank [it] out’ rather I suggested it shouldn’t have been the main headline and mentioned later on,and perhaps better to cover it in depth in a separate programme.
I can see how it could be reported either way, but for me a headline is breaking news. Ukraine, cost of living, etc isn't breaking news. Its an update on an ongoing situation, grave as it is.
Bit unfair Nin. He was a well liked guy who did a huge amount to promote awareness of prostate cancer. Possibly saving or at least extending the lives of thousands of blokes. As others have said we are choc full of cost of living, Ukraine, Liverpool murder, Tory leadership and more. Sometimes it does no harm to focus on the good guys and all they do. In saying that you are fully entitled to your view which I respect. Life would be bloody boring if we all thought the same.
Thank you Irish. Your post gave me the final push to get myself checked. No symptoms but been on my mind for a while. Saw the doc today, internal examination done and blood test booked for next week. All over in a jiffy and not the slightest bit embarrassing. Will let you know the result.
That’s great BT. It really is a simple process to give yourself peace of mind. So glad you had it checked and I hope everything will be okay. I’ve just had the results from my latest PSA test and, whilst the level is slightly increasing, there’s no need for further action right now. Looking forward to hearing how you got on.
Had a health assessment two weeks back via work. Results were back end of last week, all good with my PSA results and generally in decent enough shape for my age. Couple of results (gamma GTA and another, connected with liver and kidneys need a follow up with my GP just to be safe as slightly raised, but not worryingly so). Usual advice of eat a little healthier, do a little more exercise... So forced myself out for a 5k run this morning.
Well done Brizzle. I must admit I’ve been slacking with my Parkruns recently. Fed up with coming last!! Will head off for a jog in the morning.
