I have learnt that digression is a major part of this forum usually causing any subject no matter how far removed to stray and transform itself into a Lewis Hamilton free for all.

    Canada produces the best race.
Bahrain was never meant to host the season opener.
The best racing happens in the first half of the season.

Of course, we all knew this already.

Ha! <laugh> I'm sincerely sorry you feel like this Jacky! :)

My interest in this forum (and others in different countries), is borne of keeping in touch with real motor racing followers, which obviously includes every one of us here. Occasionally I will volunteer an opinion, but it is surely the nature of the beast to find opposition to one's view. One's opinion is borne of experience, which forms a natural 'prejudice' in every one of us; but it is important to understand that this is an essential requirement of forming any ideas about the world, and since it also forms the basic mechanism for survival, it is not confined to humans.

Now, you might be surprised to hear this but I swear to you that I mean it in all sincerity: I like to discover that I am wrong!

Discovering that one's previous perceptions need to be modified is the very essence of learning. I teach; and I believe that a good teacher should be a good student; i.e. one should always be seeking to learn from others. Of course, what matters is that when sifting through the opinions of others for this self-improvement, one should seek logical, well-presented opposition in order to allow one's opinion to properly evolve.

It should therefore come as no surprise that being reasonable in expressing one's opinion is the most effective way of making one's point, whether it be Lewis WDC, WestCoastBoogaloo, EternalMSC, allsaintchris [edited in], Bergkamp [edited in], ErnieBecclestone, AbsolutelyGlorious, Jacky_Ickx or cosicave (and every other valid * member of this forum).

*Apologies for the names. Apart from Jacky's and my own, they were picked entirely at random [edit: prior to complaints below] and my opinion of those mentioned is totally irrelevant: I should stress that they are in no way intended to validate or invalidate any opinions, or to reinforce or be disparaging to any member - whether mentioned or not.

Not true, just look at this 2009 video, long before Lewis made his "huge cockups". Lauda talked positive about him.

Those are indeed some informative and knowledgeable members you have listed there Jacky.

An impartial f1 fan like yourself should have no problem having a balanced debate no matter what the subject was.

Really good idea for a topic this one.

1, i think regs (not just tyres) can have a big effect on drivers, e.g. Schumi much more suited to the pitstop era extracting the max out of the car in short stints as opposed to maxing the car out as it gets faster with less fuel.

2, I dont think the teammate has bought the worst out of these guys, but it does add a nice psycholgical pressure into the mix - Alonso just didnt fit with Mclaren, Massa not been the same since his accident, Lewis distracted by pussycat doll shinanegans.

3, True I underestimated him, loads of respect to JB. Considering how the majority are saying he is amazing and Lewis is awful, 38 points was a lower gap than I thought. I wonder if Lewis will be more like Jenson as he matures, Jenson didnt have the best 5 years in his first 5 in formula 1 (this is Lewis' 5th year?), then came good later on hopefully Lewis will learn from Jenson and they can both work together next season so McLaren can win the title next year!

    4, yes

5, I have had enough of DRS, lets ban it and instead have a system that activates the brakes of the lead driver or some sort of tractor beam device :emoticon-0105-wink: Seriously get rid of it - way too artificial and massively different results from race to race.

6, Lauda's comments vary from one week to the next on all issues, Ive never really seen him race as to young or watched videos of him so not pay much attention to him, as far as I am concerned it may aswell be Erik Comas banging on.

    My Own Learnings:-

7, F1 cant afford to keep giving races to unsustainable territories at the expense of the existing fanbase (Korea, Bahrain - will Abu Dhabi etc get bored if Vettel keeps wrapping the title up before their race?)

8, Interviewers will always ask Jenson about Lewis to wind him up

9, Interviewers will always ask Lewis about Jenson to wind him up

10, It seems to be increasingly difficult for 2 drivers to have a racing incident, the steward seem to feel they have to penalise someone in all cases - Webber caused an avoidable collision last season when he visciously and mercilessly rammed poor kovy from behind and recieved no penalty  Oh apart from he crashed out :emoticon-0105-wink:

11, F1 is much better when the top teams produce cars that are similar in performance but have their own individual strengths and weaknesses rather than the one man show that has even bored me this season. Roll on 2012 season

The Arsenal supporter's complaint has been noted. As a gesture of goodwill; I will edit you in in place of a Moderator.

Complaints from all Saints are taken very seriously. As a gesture of goodwill, I will also edit you in in place of another understanding Moderator.

Thanks for your efforts BLS, but as a long suffering Moderator, I know you'll have already seen what's coming and understand the need to be edited out! ;)

Jacky_Ickx: Thanks to you, this thread has already proved a learning experience for me. In all my life, I have never had cause to write consecutive ins in any sentence. But now I've had lots of practice - even using the plural!

DRS was a lot of fun to start with especially turkey, but it has indeed gotten dull and it doesn't even seem to work anymore, also it skewers quali

Hamilton will always be the main talking point of a race, even if he had a dull eventless race

oh and the stewards still hate him

    Pirreli don't suit aggresive drivers

I was right when I said tyre preservation would be very important this year, I remember a certain someone saying it would cease to be relevant ;)

I hate the safety car - nothing personal bernd

Humphrey, DC, eddie and brundle make a very good team

I still think Lee McKenzie is fit

    kers is an unsung hero

adrian newey has made the sport dull

    along with vettel

    the big bad wolf

how to use the colour function

my favourite driver isn't what I thought he was

McLaren are going to beat ferrari in the WCC for a 3rd time running

I prefer dull racing and a close championship over exciting racing and a dull championship

Shuamchers records are looking increasingly fragile

    What i've learnt this season;

    1) Energy drinks cost a bloody fortune. Thank god the bizzare timed races have finished now
    2) Mark Webber is a pretty lousy driver
    3) It's possible to juggle two careers at once (Jaime Alguersuari, F1 Driver and DJ Phenomenon)
    4) Rupert Murdoch is a ****
    5) How to quote people on this site
    6) Lewis hamilton isn't as good as he's made out to be
    7) Adrian Newey would look better with an afro
    8) Red Bull should make their cars white and orange, to annoy McLaren
    9) Fernando Alonso is the best F1 driver at the moment
    10) Damn you BBC sellouts. **** the olympics, this is real sport.

    ?!?! Moi? <whistle>
An interesting choice of words there Sea-Man. Nonetheless, I admit (and made a similar acknowledgement at about the time of the third race) to being very pleasantly surprised; shocked even; that Pirelli have done such a great job after initial concerns over longevity - with shredded marbles the size of mashed grapefruit during winter testing! They have certainly exceeded my expectations and helped provide some scintillating racing.

Of all the things to come out as success stories for this season, Pirelli certainly have good cause to celebrate. And yes, I was wrong.

This is not a denial but "cease to be relevant" is not a phrase I remember! I also remember saying how it might actually play into the hands of smoother drivers, and in particular; Jenson Button. I would also add that they 'toughened' things up once the season got into full flow.

Then again, perhaps someone else said what you've quoted and I've taken the bait? :D

Some other good points there too. Cheers.

Lol cosicave that discussion of ours about pirelli beofre the season is the longest internet discussion I have ever had, your right I have noticed the tyres seem to be lasting longer, not sure if this is a good thing yet. but it is certainly good that they aren't leaving the footballs from pre season tests.

cease to be relevant was a bit ott I agree, less of a factor is perhaps more accurate, taking emphasis away from the driver and towards the pit wall

PS: I must apoloagise for my smugness over being right for once only it doesn't happen very often so I have to enjoy it while I can lol......

<laugh> Nevertheless, you've made a fair point Sea-man. Good call on Pirelli and something I didn't see happening when we discussed it.
    Thanks.

P.S. At least I was correct about one thing: you were referring to me! <laugh>
