Agree, that's why I throw in PNE who also had a lot of chances against us, especially when we effectively set up shop in the second half. We'll see over the next few.
We needed to double up on him. That's all you can do against a good tricky winger once he has the ball. That surely was Williams role. He tried but either not hard enough, or not good enough.
Thing is I remember the same criticism levelled at Wilks for not dropping back and helping Coyle - same was never true on the left. Is it just coincidence or is there more to it?
Being narrow is something you can’t accuse some posters of being. To be fair, you could have frozen a picture of Man City’s defence a few times yesterday and seen a similar situation.
So where is Williams? Because in that situation Coyle is near to his centre back which is the right position as he can’t allow a big gap between him and fig And where is Alfie Jones??? Centre mid right side and nowhere to be seen Edit He’s way over on the left Completely out of position
Exactly the same with the Burnley goal - Coyle nowhere near the winger and same with Allahyar - the winger is given too much space and every team that plays against us will see exactly the same - we really need to do something about it
Jones dropping in for Elder who is tracking back. It's a bit daft picking up a still like this and analysing it without knowing what just happened further up the pitch in the previous phase. The things I can take from it is that Williams, surprisingly, doesn't seem to be busting a gut to get back, and Coyle is probably a bit too far across. But even that's unfair without knowing the full story.
The 2 centre backs are more or less where they should be and closish together, Williams, and he may have already been subbed by this point, is a forward player, at times will tracks back but he also is not very good at it, too light weight, Allahyar did a much better job. But my point is that Coyle often gets drawn in too narrow and then leaves a big gap out left, which is often exploited by the opposition.
And as I keep saying he’s told to do that John He’s where he should be in that pic He can only be further wide if Alfie Jones is covering the gap between him and figs
WBA were lacking confidence, we were right to get at them from the start, completely different to the Norwich game were we had to weather an early storm. Unfortunately tiredness/lack of depth with injuries caught up with us as the game went on. Being tighter at the start of the second half was clearly needed, and in an away game that would have made sense anyway.
Maybe so Chazz, but in my opinion, he is a bit too narrow, leaving a big gap and then often too late to get out and close the winger down before he gets the cross in.
Coyle getting drawn in and not getting cover from the right winger has been a recurring theme in the last 3 games since we went to 4-3-3. I thought Williams might give him more backing than Allahyar but he didn't. I think there's a bit of a problem with the system and a bit of a problem with the player. I assume Coyle is being told to almost play as the right side of a back 3 when the oppo are attacking as he's done that consistently in the last 3 games, but the result has been that overlapping against us has looked so easy. But I do also think he's struggling a bit defensively at this level for pace and looked far less comfortable than Elder, which doesn't surprise me as feel Elder has been pretty consistently up to this level since he first joined us. I think at least until Sinic is available we might need to go back to 3-5-2, where Coyle is less exposed and we get Tetteh and Oscar working together.
I saw that photo on twitter last night. It’s pointless to freeze frame play like that. Roll it back five seconds and you would have a totally different perspective. And in any event, as others have said, the first reaction I had to seeing it was “where the **** is Williams?”.
It's been a recurring theme for a lot longer than that. With different right wingers. And I've never seen the same thing happen on the left. The only common theme being Coyle. Is it a system issue or a Coyle issue?
