In the Class-3 Stayers Handicap finalé at Sandown this evening, (18:42), Happy could run really well despite having won only one race to date, gelding just cannot seem to get his head in front where it counts most of the time. Well-bred, being by Galileo out of a Footstepsinthesand mare, has decent overall form. Today, he might just finally manage another win, but, to be honest, one can only hope! Negative for me is that I never seem to get Mark Johnston's runners right, even though his stable win countless races. This time, capable apprentice Oliver Stammers (3) is on board for the Johnston yard. In view of all this, a very modest wager is the sensible way to go. 11/1 best price indication at time of writing, and so E/W is the right option. (Beautiful day down here where I live, so we're off shortly for a walk in the foothills south of here)
All eyes will undoubtedly be on the final edition of the Sky Bet Sunday Series at Sandown this afternoon/evening on ITV4. But over at Deauville this afternoon there are a couple of big races. Just five go to post for the Group 1 Prix Morny over nearly six furlongs but none of them are French. Are the French two year olds not up to much or has Aidan O’Brien’s Blackbeard scared them all off? He is the best of the quintet on known form and the next best in the race is Phoenix Stakes runner-up Persian Force – slammed seven lengths that day by ante post Guineas favourite Little Big Bear. Those two should fight out the finish unless Richard Fahey’s surprise Norfolk Stakes winner The Ridler (beat The Antarctic that day) proves a revelation over the extra furlong. The other Group 1 on the card is the Prix Jean Romanet over a mile and a quarter. This is especially significant with regards to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as the seven year old mare Verry Elleegant makes her European debut for Francis-Henri Graffard with one Frankie Dettori booked to ride. Obviously it is completely impossible to assess the chances of the New Zealand bred mare but she won last year’s Melbourne Cup, was Australian Horse of the Year 2021 and her last race was at Randwick in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes where she finished only fifth as the favourite for trainer Chris Waller. She is opposed by new stablemate Ebaiyra, who is fitted with blinkers today as she goes in search of her first Group 1, but simply does not look good enough. Sir Michael Stoute’s Ville De Grace has the services of Ryan Moore but she has not been seen since finishing behind Aristia at York in May prior to which she was ahead of Ebaiyra in the Dahlia at HQ. Andre Fabre’s Burgarita has run up a sequence of seconds this term, finishing in front of Ebaiyra in a Listed race in April and finishing in front of Rumi in the Group 2 Prix Corrida in May. Irish Group 3 winner Rosscarbery is interesting but she did finish stone last in the Pretty Polly, suggesting that she is here for generous place money. In conclusion, this is a Group 1 race in name only but Frankie’s mare is the one everyone wants to see.
There look to be a couple of bankers on the Sandown card but I generally try to avoid that sort of trap. In the opener, Mick Shannon’s Miss Attitude seeks a hat-trick after winning a similar race at Newbury following a maiden win over course and distance. In the Mile (6:12), Sir Michael Stoute’s Ikhtiraaq has a 6lb penalty for dotting up in a three runner race at Pontefract following on from a four runner race at Yarmouth. In the finale, my old friend Evaluation is a little too short in the betting for my liking, especially since he has not been seen since the Northumberland Vase on the Newcastle kitty litter in June. Prior to that he won the Sunday Series race at Musselburgh to complete a four timer. Good luck to Swanny and anyone else doing Happy in a first time visor in this race – he is not quite as well bred as Evaluation! If he is fit, hat-trick seeking Aggagio is a danger to all. The Apprentice handicap at 5:12 must be one of the most competitive such events of the season with three runners seeking hat-tricks Andaleep, Pledge Of Honour and Five Zeros but none of them likely to start favourite with Ian Williams’ Aqwaam under Harry Davies tipped by the Timeform analyst on SportingLife.com. If forced to bet I would go with Dean Ivory’s Pledge Of Honour as he beat Andaleep two starts back over track and trip then followed up at Doncaster easily. Just seven face the starter (at time of writing) in the 5:42 Fillies’ handicap. Spirit Of The Bay has yet to open her account this term, was beaten quite comfortably by Pledge Of Honour last time at Doncaster and her best effort appears to have been fifth in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot so it is hard to see her giving weight all round here. Invigilate also ran at Royal Ascot, being an also-ran in the Sandringham, since when she was well beaten in a five runner race at HQ giving little cause for optimism. Having shown little in four starts, Outside World steps up to nine furlongs here presumably in hope rather than expectation. The maiden Follow That Star had a remote view of Emily Upjohn over course and distance in April and was half a length second to New Heights on this track last time so has to enter calculations to finally get her head in front. Typical Woman is yet to open her 2022 account and her best effort was a well beaten second at Haydock on easy ground, so Hollie Doyle may have her work cut out. Roger Varian’s filly Prism collected both of her wins on the kitty litter and failed to win in five races on turf as a juvenile, so I cannot be taking her Wolverhampton win last time at face value back on turf. So that leaves me with AFTER THE RAIN, a winner of three races this year but a well beaten third of four last time after a two month layoff. Running today off the same mark as that day, I think she is worth another chance to continue her early season progress.
