Feels like there's enough smoke for this one now... the usually very reliable Manchester Evening News reporting that Saints are the leading candidate to sign James Garner for between £15m-£20m. Some at United feel the club is undervaluing him and making a mistake by selling.
He's changed his image since The Rockford Files (and Maverick). But he looks good for someone who died eight years ago.
Even if we dont pull this off SR clearly have serious money to invest. We've already spent £50m+ and now clearly have the means and desire to spend c.£40m on Garner and Ramos. You'd think the bloat will almost certainly be going soon if these 2 do come in.
Be quality if we get him in. Will alleviate some of the sadness of Romeu going for sure. He’s better than mctominay. Not sure what United are thinking.
If we get him for £15m with no forward strings attached then that is incredible. We were linked ages ago but I thought we had no chance. He’s so good.
They want to buy a top CM (De Jong/Casemiro) but don't have the funds for that as well as spending big on a striker. McTominay is a fraud so wouldn't generate much in terms of a transfer fee, whereas Garner will fetch £15m+.
United still have the worst transfer policy of any club over the last decade. To go from where they were, to where they are now… and steadily declining is really remarkable. On balance I would still rather keep Romeu, but if he wants to finish his career in Spain I wouldn’t begrudge him that at all.
Looks even better after watching that, someone that does the dirty work, but is also decent technically and can.pick a wonderful pass. I'm sold, I want Garner in and let's go to a midfield 3.
He’s a very diverse player. He’s confident and was key for Forest last year. I’m surprised he hasn’t been used at United and I’d be really excited by him with JWP or Lavia in a 2. Three would certainly be an option though. He feels like he has the mobility that Ralph has always wanted in his midfield (and had at RB).
I think with him I'd hope we'd go to a 3 in midfield, that would give the back 4 better cover as it basically makes Lavia job more defined by sitting just ahead of the back 2., whilst being mobile enough to get up if needed.
Any idea why Forest didn’t sign him permanently after having him on loan? It was it a case of United not wanting to sell, Forest signing replacements and then United deciding they do want to sell?
Sounds like it. They’ve signed a bunch of central midfielders already. Signing the midfielder and left back from Huddersfield for a combined 10m looks like very good business from a squad perspective if they carry on playing like they did against West Ham. And much lower fees than I would have expected. Maybe they were both in their last year of a contract
This sounds very much like someone who has been on our list for a while and didn’t think was available. If we get him then it is very much an example of a transfer that would not have happened under the previous owners. Perhaps this one is pulling forward part of next summer’s transfer budget due to unexpected availability
Yeah I agree, would make sense for me... do wonder whether next summer MU will come in for JWP, and we will be giving a year for Garner to ger upto speed before we sell our captain. #conspiracytheories. Agreed on the point we would never be able tp get any of these players under previous ownership, so satisfying rhst our strategy is really benefitting now, just needed the right investment. Very thankful thus far for SR.
There is always a chance that someone comes in for JWP. But right now the other teams most likely have players or higher profile targets - E.g. Bellingham for Liverpool. And apart from this and next summer if he continues the rate he is going clubs like city and Liverpool will be in for Lavia before JWP. They don’t really need the set piece bonus as much as we do I saw an opinion piece muse that man United are going to panic and half-jokingly suggested a last minute nine figure bid for ward-prowse. But they are currently (and foolishly) adopting the strategy of overpaying in fees and wages to try and get champions league players who don’t really want to go there to join. They should be looking at Neves, Tielemans, JWP, Ivan Toney and players in that bracket. It baffles me they didn’t sign Bissouma last year. They seem to think they are above such players when those were the players they always used to sign. Like plucking Cole from Newcastle, Yorke from Villa and Keane from Forest. They never used to go out and sign established elite players. Indeed yorke was signed when the failed to get kluivert. Their first ever foray into that market was a failure - Veron It has pretty much never ever worked for them apart from one season of Van Persie.
