Correct me if I'm wrong but you guys, in your entire history (126 years is it?), you've had just 9 seasons in the top flight...

Sometimes I think you just need to face facts that there is a kind of natural level that you are there to exist at and if you are lucky you may get the odd moment where you get a bit of a high and you'll also get moments where you'll drop below that level.

Learn to live with it guys....

I accepted a long time ago that Cardiff are an ok/mid-size Championship level club for the main part nowadays.

We've had 2 brief flirtations with the top flight, one of which was totally unexpected.
Yet we've also had many years in the bottom two divisions.
Life isn't so bad in the second tier.

I don't disagree. I have said on here many times that in my lifetime, I'd have been very happy to be where we were 3 years ago, and still pretty happy with where we are, for now...

Fair point, like you we support our local team, if we wanted to support a prem team there’s nothing stopping us.

I accept where we are, but wanting and dreaming of better days is part of the deal, if I’m honest I don’t like PL football, but I want success for my team, (And the money would be nice).

I was a teenager when we last gained promotion to the top flight and I’d love to experience that at least once more in my life time.

On the whole though you are right life in the second tier is not so bad, but dreams are good too.

    It’s funny in a way…
This year, because of the long, hot summer, people of a certain age keep harping back to 1976.
All I can remember of that year is City getting promoted, and that first game up at Highbury! Oh for that to happen just once more in my lifetime!!
The weather was nice as well by the way!!

The first game at Highbury is the best I’ve ever seen City play, outclassed Arsenal at Highbury , the best day of my football watching life - bar none. What an amazing day.

.....and in comments to others on this thread, like all I an sure, I have followed Bristol City, the team all of my life,I've learned to live with 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th divisions, crowds down to 4k and full stadium, I have moaned, groaned and celebrated the success but I have stuck, I can't help it, I love and endured, enjoyed the agony and ecstacy at all levels, nothing changes...Up the City !

Regrettably I am a total know nothing about City's life in the First Division due to my emigration to Canada in 1975. During those far off days there was absolutely zero coverage of any English sport and of course there was no internet or any other way of enjoying the experience, if only from afar over the waves. I even missed the sad days when we all but disappeared off the radar for good but the situation was saved by good people who have been enshrined at Ashton Gate, as indeed they should be. To be able to go and watch City play at the top grounds must have been a thrill for those who travelled those distances and how I would have loved to have been there with you but sadly it will never be on my resume of sporting memories.

    That is an opinion.

A fact is that BCFC accounts identify a financial loss for the last financial year of thirty eight million pounds.

Bristol City are not achieving those levels with what is exceptional spending for Bristol City FC.

Bristol City will be a poorly ran football club. The owner employs story tellers as Managers , and has been known to sign his own forty year old goal keepers.

Was this before or after Cardiff fans "re-modelled" the turnstiles the one year? :emoticon-0111-blush (sorry about that BTW.. before my years of travelling to watch us but apologies nonetheless... Oh, and for the toilets last year too... That wasn't me either I hasten to add!).

It's funny really, it can be quite nostalgic looking back at how the grounds used to be... However, I have to admit, they were pretty shocking by today's standards.

Some wise words in here Brizzle. NO club has a divine right to play in the top tier - and it's especially unrealistic to expect us to ever be competing regularly in the top 5 with the big boys, or in Europe (it DOES happen; Blackburn, Norwich - even Millwall have been there via their cup run a few years ago)
However, for myself (and many of us) there are a few facts that grate hard
    - We have held the dubious honour of being the largest city in the UK without a top-flight football team for decades
    - We have had a Premiership-ready stadium for the past 5 years
    - We have had a billionaire owner for many years - one of the richest men in football outside the Premiership
    - We have Premiership-standard training facilities at Failand
Everything is there OFF the pitch to enable success ON it. That doesn't guarantee it, but it gives us a hell of a head start.
It's ON the pitch - and arguably in the dugout and board room - where we have fallen short for YEARS under successive managers/regimes - and continue to do so.
That hurts like mad - especially when we see other clubs WITHOUT the facilities we have overtake us and taste the promised land.

Clifton, I'll bow to your superior knowledge of the financial dealings of your club, but I don't recall there being too many Bristol City fans complaining or being concerned when you guys were one game away from the top flight.

I'm not trying to stir up trouble BTW here. We ourselves had similar fun under Sam Hammam for a while where it all looked great .. signings, progress on and off the pitch etc.

It's always when the "success" dries up that fans tend to then start questioning things...

I'm pleased to see several folks on here having what I would consider to be the right attitude of hoping for "progress" rather than expecting it.

Sadly too many fans (often the ones brought up on a diet of Premier League hype) believe that spending money MUST equal success and any/every defeat is unacceptable when you consider yourselves to be a "big" club compared to others.

Clubs our size or smaller that go on to achieve sustained "success" are a rarity in truth and we all ought to be a little careful in what we wish for.

As I say, the second tier isn't so bad and if anything is more entertaining and "fair" than the glitz and glamour of the top division these days.

Apart from promotion meaning your team has done well, I am in no hurry to see Cardiff head back up to the land of greed, selfishness and arrogance known as the Premier League.

Sorry Brizz - I get what you're saying but can't bring myself to endorse that mindset.

The Prem is what it is. You either want to be a part of it or not, you sure as hell aren't going to change it. For me I can't wait to get back there though accept that it's a project and could take time. The Championship is just fine and I thoroughly enjoy it, but if you haven't got the aspiration and motivation to win it then you're just treading water and that sucks for me.

Watched that Chelsea/Spurs game last night and it was a blast full of emotion, aggression and no little skill - briiliant spectacle and a massive boost for the top flight game. I appreciate they are top teams, but I also watched Brighton and Brentford give Man U a right going over and that was really pleasing to see "small clubs" doing over the big boys - I'd like my team to be a part of that.

With the sheer amount of money involved in achieving " success", changing the status quo is a long way off. You either go for it or stagnate. If the benchmark of success is survival in the Championship, then I give up.

Looking between leagues, it is interesting to look at the perspective.

Its been said repeatedly that many fans talk about their club being a 'big club' and they 'deserve to be in the premier league'.
You heard it from leeds even when they were in League 1.
    Similar for Sunderland.
    No one deserves anything.

As for spending, we've blown a chunk of change (for Cardiff anyway) under various managers with limited success.
    You've maybe spent more.
Compare that with Man U who have spent over a billion on players in recent years and appear on a downward spiral.

A couple teams have bought sucess (Chelsea and Man City), others have been more circumspect (Arsenal, Spurs, even liverpool) with varying degrees of success.
Others limit spending and tuck in behind the pack. Leicester's one year gives a ray of hope.

Getting to the top table is a double edged sword. We've been fortunate in getting there twice and got caught betwixt and between. Its taken a few years to deal with the fallout, though under Morison we may be turning the corner.

I fear for the likes of Forrest who are throwing everything at staying up. Could be disastrous if they fail. Terminal even.
Bournmouth, Brighton and Brentford may be bucking the trend.
Even Burnley eventually ran out of steam.
The Swans were a beacon of hope, but their spending (wages more than signings) have left them with a hangover.
Then you have the yo-yo clubs.

It really is a tough one.

I think you have to aspire to the premier league but not be dispirited if its only for a season.
But dont throw cash at it.
    Derby have showed that.
