http://www.london24.com/sport/totte...for_best_ever_premier_league_start_1_1114033? Let's make it 22 points from our first ten for our new Prem record Of course in 1960 we won our first ten Lge games .... But hey the current team are playing football worthy of that legendary side.
GH10 - agree with a lot of what you have posted recently, you are a poster that talks a lot of sense. But...... suggests you may be getting a little carried away. 60 - 63 we had one of the greatest ever teams, and the current one is very good, but not the GOAT.
The Double side was truly great, but back then, remember, it only had British players. The Premier league has the best players from all over the world now so the standard is bound to be higher. So I suspect our current team is of a higher standard v the best in the world than the 61 team. So GH10 and HD could both be right.
My comment was mostly tongue in cheek, but the point is that the double winning side were the best team around at the time, and the current one is not (quite). The current team would win any mythical match up due to fitness etc - although I suppose we could settle Harry's query about Parker being nearly as good as Mackay!
Hi HD, Fair enough, but I stand by what I said though 100%. I'll repeat it, the current side are playing football worthy of that legendary side. In actual fact, in 'absolute terms' the football being played by the current side is light years ahead of the football played by any side, including ours, in the early 60s. To play at the pace, precision and beauty we have seen from Spurs this season, is something the early 60s team could only dream of. But of course, life has moved on, people are fitter, bigger, faster, stronger, etc. The pitches are better, the boots superior, etc, etc, etc. However, even in relative terms the football we are playing now is an absolute joy and definitely worthy of the 60/63 side.
Fair comments PS, the Prem is an amazing lge now, the best in the world, and our team includes players like VDV, Modric, Friedel, BAE, etc etc that give it a flair and quality that British teams alone couldn't emulate from the 60s.
The thing is, although I wasn't (unfortunately! ) around for the legendary side, we have to take into consideration that players, not just in this country but around the world, are far more "advanced" if that's the best way to put it nowadays than they were back then. These guys can near enough run at full pace for 90 minutes, there are separate coaches that work with different specialities, supplements which help improve speed/ stamina/ strength, the equipment in terms of boots for more precision passing or faster movement, tighter shirts for a more streamlined effect, footballs that swerve with the slightest of touches, I really could go on. Therefore i think comparing the sides maybe a bit harsh (perhaps not harsh, but I'm sure you're all smart enough to understand where I'm coming from), in fairness, we're probably playing far superior football to any team, both club or country from the 60's/ 70's/ 80's and even as recent as the 90's. It's kind of like an evolution, just like games consoles - The Sega Megadrive was the best thing since sliced bread back in the day, yet compare it to a PS3/ Xbox 360 and it's no match in the slightest.
You cannot compare sides from different era's, there have been too many changes for that. The only fair way to compare is to measure them against their peers and on that basis the 60's team is out of sight. The current team are on their way but only that. They will need to book some tangible trophy's before we can begin to compare them with the all time greats of 60/61.
all, my point is not that this team is as good, relatively, as the 60/63 side, it isn't. My point is the football that we are playing is worthy of that legendary team, and I think it is. It has the swagger, the beauty, the skill, the artistry of that team, IMHO. It was great to hear 'glory, glory, hallelujah' echoing round the Lane on Sunday, because that performance was 'glory, glory football'. Of course, in absolute terms, it's way ahead of that team or the 50/51 title team. I remember when we won 5-0 at Hearts thinking this how Arthur Rowe must have dreamed 'push and run' could be played. The way we passed and moved that day at a high pace was 'push and run heaven'.
There seems to be a lot of belief within the squad this season. & a new and evolving maturity, we're playing exciting football but it's sensible football at the same time.
Lets just hope confidence doesn't lead to over confidence which leads to arrogance which leads to sloppy 1-0 defeats against Wolves, Wigan & West Ham
I'm enjoying this, its a great start, and I'm taking no notice of the 1st 2 games, I'd actually like to play the pair of them again now! On the other hand, its inevitable the **** performance is round the corner, lets hope people don't over-react.
That's the thing though, Notso. The performances against Blackburn and Newcastle weren't of the highest calibre, but we still came away with 4 points. How often have we done that in the past?
I know....just referring to last year where we must have been the only team not to register a goal against Wigan and West Ham. We can have games where we are brilliant and play the opposition off the park. Then we also have games where we can't seem to get anything right. We need to squeeze those out!
