To an extent, they've already beaten Russia. The myth of the Russian military might has been exposed for all the world to see. The flip side of that is that they need to do something to save face. Giving them that opportunity by making concessions now would weaken that 'victory'.
I believe the biggest problem was the cozy relationship between Germany and Russia both benefitting in the pipeline feeding the EUROPEAN UNION. America didn't like it so Germany were told to can the operation with the US taking over distribution through a different route. One of the biggest tragedies is the barbaric practice of forcing Ukranian men to fight or be killed as a deserter. Civilians should never be forced to fight for their country in 2022. ALL Civilians no matter their age or sex should be allowed to leave Ukraine for a safe country .
