    Blackpool v Swansea City

    Competition - Sky Bet Championship
    Venue - Bloomfield Road
    Date - 13 August 2022
    Kick off - 3:00pm

Following their hugely disappointing - yet hardly surprising - defeat at Oxford, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is a tricky looking encounter away at Blackpool.

On Tuesday evening, the Swans' miserable start to the season continued with a first-round EFL Cup exit at the hands of League One Oxford United.

The Swans had a two-goal advantage courtesy of first half efforts from Jay Fulton and Liam Cullen.

However, after Russell Martin made 4 changes around the hour mark, it all went belly-up for the Swans.

Firstly, Gorrin, who appeared to be chasing a lost cause, took full advantage when Azeem Abdulai's back pass prompted Swans’ keeper Steven Benda into a poor clearance, which deflected off Gorrin into the back of the net.

Benda redeemed himself in the dying minutes, making a fine save to deny Tyler Goodrham, but he could do nothing about the injury-time equaliser as Brannagan's free-kick cruelly deflected off the wall.

With no extra time, the game went straight to penalties and Oxford ran out 5-3 winners.

Whilst the Swans were losing to Oxford, League Two Barrow made it to the second round of the Carabao Cup after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Championship side Blackpool.

The Seasiders had made seven changes to their line-up and handed a first start to exciting teenager Charlie Patino, the 18-year-old on loan from Arsenal.

Blackpool dominated possession and had far more shots on goal, but could not find a breakthrough.

And as Barrow hung on, goalkeeper Farman saved late on from Fiorini and CJ Hamilton to take it to penalties, which Barrow won 4-3.

    Blackpool Manager Michael Appleton said:

”I'm disappointed to go out but I'm not disappointed with how the players applied themselves. Some of the play in the second half was good but we lacked a bit of confidence in front of goal."

Contrast Appleton’s post match comments with those of Russell Martin - Martin said:

“You want to see if guys can do it - sink or swim time. A few swam really well and a few sunk," he said.

"You can accept defeat if the lads stick to what we have worked on throughout the year we have been here.

"The performance was so good for 60 minutes - but then it can't end up going completely the other way. It's ridiculous.

"I am angry and the boys should be really angry with what they let the game turn into."

The Swans have played Blackpool on 45 occasions, winning 13, losing 15 and drawing 17.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Blackpool ran out 1-0 winners, courtesy of an early Gary Madine goal:

After the match, Neil Critchley, then Blackpool’s Head Coach said:

“You know you are going to have to do certain things playing against Swansea. They are the best possession team in the Championship and they cause you a lot of problems.

"But in terms of chances created, the best chances fell to us. We scored early from a set-piece, which we felt was an area we could exploit.

"Josh has had a big chance before half-time, Kirky has had a chance, and [we had] a couple after half-time. Other than one save [from Grimshaw], we have been quite comfortable really.

"We always carried a threat on the counter-attack. They can make you suffer without the ball but our players are good at suffering."

    Whereas Russell Martin’s take was:

“We have let ourselves conceding a really poor early goal from someone we spoke about. We worked on avoiding a block and we have been blocked in the box, so it's unacceptable, the goal, really.

"But we were so dominant. The performance was really good. We had a couple of scary moments against a team who are very direct and have very good runners off Madine.

"I am proud of what the players have given us - I think the fans will know they have given everything.

"We didn't create enough. We had one massive chance with Cyrus, but when you are playing against a team built on defensive structure, it becomes difficult and because we have given them a one-goal start, it changes their mentality.

"We have a lot of young men playing. We just need to keep learning and growing. I would love to see us in a year's time, especially when we come back here."

So Russell will have his wish on Saturday - will we see an improvement? Will Blackpool score early again, and will we still make 400 passes in our own half (despite trailing from early doors)?

I think that Blackpool will run out 3-0 winners ….

I truly hope that I’m wrong, and I truly hope that Russ can turn it around, but based on his intransigence so far, I’m not holding my breath …. <cheers>

Thanks Taff for your posting while 'off duty'.
I expect Ben and Joe to start so it will be interesting to see how we go with those two in the side. We are more than capable of bringing home 3 points BUT we must stop this suicide defending and not let teams back into the game. Hopefully Obafemi will put away a chance on Saturday so it's a 1-0 win to the Swans for me.

The early season optimism has gone. It will be another game of endless passing and Blackpool hitting up on the break and score with their only two shots on target.

Hell the Blackpool defenders could take there deckchairs out on pitch and scoff down a 99 and we probably still couldn’t break them down.

Viagra. He sent the Mrs to the bar and said "I need a stiff one after seeing the Swans result".

I was thinking 3 - 0, maybe we nick one, 3 - 1. It's pretty depressing just thinking about it.

I hate to say this, but it is getting that I couldn’t care whether we win or lose. It is that boring. Honestly I hope we win but if defeat means the club see sense and make a change then I wouldn’t be gutted. Still hope we can much 3 points.

I will be watching caerau Ely v Penrhywceiber rangers. Watching the scores in my phone
