    Oxford United v Swansea City

Competition - League Cup, Round 1
    Venue - Kassam Stadium
    Date - 9 August 2022
    Kick off - 7:45pm

Following their lacklustre performance in the home defeat against Blackburn Rovers, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is a League Cup match away at Oxford.

Blackburn Rovers made it six points from six in the Championship this season as they cruised to victory at Swansea City.

Sammie Szmodics swept Blackburn in front 39 minutes into his debut having joined from Peterborough this week.

Ben Brereton Diaz then claimed his first of the season with a classy finish just before the hour.

The Swans already looked beaten by the time Lewis Travis' drive rounded off a fine day for Rovers late on.

New Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson enjoyed a perfect first week in the Championship, but Swans’ head coach Russell Martin has much work to do after an uninspiring performance from his team.

The Swans, who looked short of attacking threat, have only one point from their first two games of the new campaign.

This was a meeting of one team who evidently remain a work in progress after a year under Martin and another who are getting used to life after Tony Mowbray - in many respects, Blackburn under Tomasson, look to have made huge progress whilst the Swans have, at best, stagnated ….

Whilst the Swans were being put to the sword by Blackburn, Tyler Goodrham was scoring a stunning individual goal deep into stoppage time to give Oxford victory over Cambridge and their first points of the League One season.

Teenager Goodrham cut in from the left, dribbling past three defenders, then curled a shot into the far top corner to deny Cambridge what would have been a third clean sheet from three league and cup games at the start of this campaign.

The Swans have played Oxford on 27 occasions, winning 10, losing 11 and drawing 6.

The most recent fixture between the 2 sides at the Kassam Stadium took place in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup in January 2016, when Swansea - of the Premier League - were sent home with their tails between their legs, courtesy of a 3-2 defeat:

Turning to Tuesday evening, I suspect that Martin will select a relatively strong side in order to get a ‘win on the board’ after a poor run that extends into last season. Oxford, on the other hand, will fancy their chances of repeating their cup success of 6 years ago.

I think that the Swans will / should run out 2-1 winners<cheers>

A repeat of the previous encounter will be of no surprise to me.

I've got no enthusiasm for this. After all, if RM was capable of firing up the team for a positive victory, why not do it at home in the league?

Not been able to see many matches but just from what I'm reading from him - I'd say RM is a total waste of time - 77% possession and a 3-0 defeat - there's none so blind as those who will not see. Last year it was no pre-season this year fiscal restraint - he only wants players he knows and then they turn into people he doesn't use - sorry but I see a relegation battle unless he his kicked out - the problem for anyone coming in is that he will inherit a team of tippy tappers who can only play backwards or across!

He has a dilemma whether to ring the changes or give players some more game time e.g. Darling and Woods. I expect we will see changes which include at least the three Cs Cabango, Congreve and Cullen plus Joe. I am ever hopeful and going for a 2-0 win to the Swans

I suspect not a full-strength side and another loss. Oxford 2 Swansea 1.

The Swans have lost both of their previous League Cup meetings with Oxford, losing in the first round in both 1967-68 and 1992-93 …
