Russell Martin admitted his Swansea City side had been made to pay for their errors after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at the Swansea.com Stadium. The Swans fell to a disappointing loss in their first home game of the new Championship campaign, with Sammie Szmodics, Ben Brereton Diaz and Lewis Travis scoring as Rovers netted from three of their four shots on target. Swansea had chances of their own, notably during a purple patch of pressure and chances early in the second half where Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi went close, but the visitors broke away to grab their second through Brereton Diaz. “We were punished for our mistakes and moments where we were not good enough,” said the Swans head coach. “We had a good period in the second half and should have scored, and their second goal is a sucker punch. “We wanted to be quicker with the ball, but they put loads of men deep in their half and any team would struggle to break that down. “We have to do a bit of work on that, but I said a couple of weeks ago that how we react to mistakes or difficult moments will define that we do, and it defined it today. For the first goal we make a mistake, and then we follow it up with another mistake to allow the guy back into the middle of the pitch. “We cannot follow one mistake with another. “We certainly wanted more from the first half, we felt we were started to find ways to open things up towards the end of the half and then we had good energy at the start of the second half. We had chances, the crowd was willing us on and then we concede. “It can’t happen and that comes down to anxiety and not being able to manage the moment and we were punished. “We have to make more of the periods where we are on top. We know what we need to work on, and we have to continue to work hard and improve and keep believing. “It’s a long season and I have no doubts about what this group of players is capable of.” My mate said: “Martin’s comments suggest we lost it from individual errors which is far from the truth. Another display like that and he will be under real pressure. Forest made a change early on last season and look what happened to them. Players were having to run to the bench to ask what they were supposed to be doing. Doesn’t bode well for the future that’s for sure.”
So, the morning after…. I believe that’s now 8 matches without a win, including last season. In that run of matches: 3 goals conceded to Blackburn and Bournemouth. 4 conceded to Reading 5 conceded to Forest. Looks like opposing Managers and Teams have worked him out.
Cardiff haven't though. To date, anyway. My two pennyworth on Martin, and I've been thinking it for some time. The man's a bit of a bluffer. Talks a good game. One dimensional. How many more humiliating performances/results before the owners have a similar viewpoint ?
Sorry change of teams, not in UK so not up to date. Anyone know why the Cov v Millers scum is off today?
Per the BBC: Coventry City's home Championship game against Rotherham on Sunday has been postponed because of an "unsafe" pitch. The Coventry Building Society Arena has been used for rugby sevens matches during the Commonwealth Games. The decision to call off the match was taken by a senior official following an 18:00 BST inspection on Saturday which deemed the surface "unplayable". "Quite frankly, I'm embarrassed by the situation," Coventry chief executive Dave Boddy told BBC CWR.
Not very good are they ! Could be a long hard slog this season ? Half a good team with little improvement at the back, if Martin wants to use us as a spring board to bigger money like most other managers here before him, then he'd better pull his fekin finger out sharpish ! Only notable signing that stood out was a well used injured joey allen .
The man's a bit of a bluffer. Talks a good game. One dimensional Kind words Lib. I'd say he's fukn useless.Just my opinion of course
I see a tough season ahead, and maybe Russell Martin will go the same way as Cooper? He is constantly announcing our financial constraints as a club, which has not improved with the stewardship of the Yanks, there was a time when we never let the financial constraints restrict us from scouting real talent and gems that fitted our football philosophy, whether he can lean on this financial stranglehold as an excuse as did Cooper or not we will have to wait and see, but he needs to focus on his strategy for solutions in games, a good defensive coach would be a start. RM reminds me a bit of Martinez, our defence was crap under Bobby brown shoes, it didn't change until Sousa came along and sorted it out.
Sensible Clubs have " financial constraints ". It's the only way to survive. Football supporters, by definition, are not sensible, and they need to understand that. Conversely, if these restraints cause so much angst, let the supporters realise all THEIR assets and hand the monies over to their Club, with a proviso that the money is used to purchase players. Never going to happen. No scope for whingeing then. I exercise " financial restraints " also. There are numerous things I would like, but restrict/restrain myself. As a result, I am solvent. Football supporters have very unrealistic expectations, and should take a grip. After all, It's not their money they are risking on a day to day, week to week, basis.
