Never want to see Doherty in a CAFC shirt again.

    Suli
    Francis - Cort - Morrison - Evina
Waggy - Stephens - Alonso - JJ (potentially Bover if fit, but think he's got another month or so?)
    Hayes - Benson

Fairly strong squad there Super, what with Morrison and JJ in it :)

Am I genuinely the only person who believes Bover is useless and that Harriott should be involved a lot more than he has been? Many others were tipping him to be a vital part of our push for promotion in pre-season, I'm not going that far, but I believe he should be above Bover and Davisson in the Left-Mid pecking order.

I think we'll need to take a few of the starters WWOCB, need some of their character in any game we play this season.. especially a no nonsense player like Morro.

Judging by our exits against Preston and Brentford you're probably right, I just hate the thought of having such a big squad and not making full use of it, especially with possibilities of injuries to our key players.

I know where your coming from, but I just can't see the Doc in a CAFC shirt ever again after Brentford. I know most were awful, but that first goal where he stupidly headed to them after Taylor shouted to play it back... that was it.

Do try to keep up, Super. Cort is playing for Guyana and therefore unavailable for the FA Cup which is why I suggested Docherty. CP is happy to have Docherty in his squad and better to play him than risk Taylor or Morrison getting injured before we have to play Huddersfield. Priorities, priorities!

I didn't realise Bover was still injured, though. Also I am not sure if Warren's loan at Kettering was renewed. If not, he could play instead of JJ for the same reasons.

Harriott is just a kid. At this stage he will develop better playing for the u-18s against other quality youngsters. A cup-tie in Halifax against a team which will probably need to resort to some Stevenage methods to stay in the game and with a hostile crowd (we are told), possibly cold and/or wet and with a lousy pitch is not the place for his first-team debut. Once management feel the juniors are ready to toughen up playing men's football they are sent out on loan to non-league clubs at a similar level to Halifax. That hasn't happened with Harriott yet because he has still to develop physically. Davisson is a more experienced, physically stronger and better all-round player at present, but I think he will be still be out on loan. If and when Davisson is overtaken in the pecking order by someone two-and-a-half years younger the club will get rid, and that has not happened yet.

I'd risk Taylor and Morro than play the Doc. I don't care about the FA cup (nor any other), but that donkey doesn't deserve to wear the red of Charlton.

    Sullivan:
    Solly:Morrison:Taylor:Wiggins:
    Waggy:Stephens/Hughes: Alonso:Evina
    Hayes :Benson.

I'd keep the back 4- we do want to win, don't we??
Evina has earned his chance, Alonso needs a proper game,we need to keep Benson fit in case BWP gets injured and it's about time Hayes played.

Yes, of course we want to win, but the Huddersfield game is (and I normally hate this expression) a six-pointer. If Halifax get over physical (more than possible) we could go into the Huddersfield game with three or four injured or carrying knocks.

Also I think we have just as good a chance of winning with an all "reserve" team as with our "first" team. The first team have no incentive. If they all play crap and we lose they know they will still continue to be selected and everyone on here will be saying "It's only the Cup, I am glad we are out of it". The reserves do have an incentive to impress and get into the first team squad of 16 for matches. It worked brilliantly against a strong Reading team. It flopped against Preston, but Halifax are no Preston.

Also the "reserves" badly need competitive matches to keep them sharp for when we have to call on them. We have been lucky with injuries so far. It won't last when the colder weather and muddy pitches arrive and teams resort to ever more desperate tactics to stop us. It cannot have gone unnoticed that most of our dropped points were against very physical teams (Sheff Wed, Stevenage and Tranmere).

This terrifies me, as I still have Northwich burned into my soul. A big win would be nice but unlikely, but I agree with everyone here. I don't want important injuries pre Huddersfield, but neither do I want Doherty to show us the exit. Fingers crossed for a Reading style performance. At least if it's on TV I'll see it over here, but then again I said that about Northwich.

By the by, the Halifax match will be the week before Brentford away. The Huddersfield match is 9 days after Brentford. I think people's points re: avoiding injuries still stand, but just sayin'

I think we'll pretty much see a Carling Cup style squad with Mikel Alonso / Cedric Evina dead certs to come into the starting eleven.

If Warren is back from Kettering (which I'd doubt tbh) I can see him being on a youthful bench involving Smith / Popo and hopefully Harriott who has been surprisingly quiet since the end of last season

Yes, my bad. Very careless of me and thanks for correcting me so politely. But as you say, my point is still valid. Actually I think we may have a harder time away to Brentford than home to Huddersfield, though the loss of three points might ultimately prove more critical in the latter case.

It's very important to try to get through to round 3. Then there will be the possibility of getting drawn against QPR, so we can sing the BWP song at double the usual volume.

It's a tough month, even with only the four games, so lots of very good arguments for resting/not risking vital players.

That said, Brentford have only won 1 of their last 7 home matches, which is a shocking record for a promotion-chasing team. Something's gotta give there

I went there at Easter 73, I think or if not '74. I went ith first wife to Skelmanthorpe to see her great aut who had married again to a bookmaker at age 73.

We went to Halifax to see the Addicks. The ground was off the road and barly visible as it seemed to be in a dip or on a ledge even. We had to desend some wooden stairs to enter. the wood was rotten and had that fungus that forms in orange red spots on the surface. The ground had a dog track and a collection of stands that did not all face the pitch.

Arthur Horsfield came out and looked at the ground, his face dropped. The pitch was bare of grass and the earth appeared red like ilmenite as seen in Nigeria and other African countries.

    We lost 3-0 very embarrassing.

We later beat then 5-2 before 3,500 at The Valley in the snow one winter and Hales got 3.

Before that in '72 '73 season we beat them 1-0 in another awful game and had Waddle of Halifax not hit a ball that was going in from Fred Kemp (ex Southampton player) when the ball was 3 yards out and going in it would have been worse. Kemp called Waddle a c**t and we all heard it. So did the ref who said that while that was possibly true he would still book him. This was right in front of us at the south end. Waddle (I think that is right) went on to play for Liverpool I think .

Happy days but a horrible ground The Shay in those days.

I personally have never been north of the Thames but I have an uncle who once travelled as far as Potters Bar and he assures me the whole of the North of England is exactly as you describe it, with fungus encrusted structures, the soil saturated with toxic waste, football pitches in chasms in the ground, and some stands facing away from the pitch (where they put the away supporters). And some of us want poor little Harriott to make his first team debut in an environment like that! For shame!
