Good Morning. It's Tuesday 2nd August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Whites turn down £33m bid for winger

Media reports are suggesting that Leeds have turned down a £33m offer from Newcastle Utd for inform winger Jack Harrison. The 25yo was instrumental in saving the Whites from relegation last season, chipping in with ten goals, and two assists from 37 appearances. He finally penned a three-year permanent deal last Summer, having spent three seasons on loan! With only two years left on his contract, can Leeds afford to be turning down good money?

Leeds already have three other specialist wingers, in the form of Luis Sinisterra, Dan James and Crysencio Summerville in their squad. They also acquired Brenden Aaronson in the Summer, who can play as an attacking midfield or winger. Do Leeds need Harrison, or would the money be better spent elsewhere?

Teams will punish Leeds out wide

Elland Road journalist Phil Hay has warned Leeds fans not to get carried away after thrashing Cagliari at the weekend. He believes the Sardinian's weren't up to much, and expressed his concern about Leeds leaving huge gaps out wide when attacking in numbers, and getting punished. Whilst Hay remains sceptical of Jesse Marsch's narrow formation, he reserved special praise for Brenden Aaronson, and insists that his contributions this forthcoming season will be vital!

We probably need to be careful not to read too much into the game, simply because Cagliari weren’t up to much, but I also thought there was a lot to like about Aaronson. Tricky on the ball, a good turn of pace and very attack minded. He looks comfortable on the ball and happy to play positively. It’s a good sign because £25m was a lot to spend on him but productivity from his area of the pitch will be vital.

Teams countering and finding all the space they need out wide has been a theme of pre-season. There are plenty of sides in the EPL with the pace and quality to do damage there and it seems to me to be a tactical thing more than personnel. When Leeds push up, their structure leaves big gaps - but maybe that will improve over time as the system becomes more familiar.

One thing Phillips was great at was covering out wide when Bielsa’s full backs pushed on. You need that sort of presence in the team if you’re playing a very high line out wide. I think it’s imperative that one of Roca/Adams (or whichever midfield pair) stays deep when Leeds go forward.

    Stalemate in pursuit of Berisha

Reports from Turkey indicate that Fenerbahce are desperate to sell Mergim Berisha, but are insistent on their £4m asking price. Super Lig teams are only allowed to register up to 14 non-Turkish players and Fenerbahce have signed nine foreign nationals this Summer alone.

Although Berisha only bagged four goals last season, Jesse Marsch is keen on the 24yo as back up to Patrick Bamford. Recent reports suggest that Leeds are willing to pay £1.75m, and prepared to pay hard ball with their Turkish counterparts if necessary!

    Morning all :emoticon-0148-yes:
Dont believe we are looking at Berisha, Adams or the Columbian playing in Mexico for Atlas. Just lazy journos, but I could be wrong but will be fkg angry if I am because so far we havent spent a penny and still have £20mish from the sales of Phillips and Rapha. I want us to make a statement and sign a top striker or potential top striker

Accurate asessment from Hay. Cagliari were utter rubbish and you'd have to question the wisdom of lining that nonsense up as a final pre season friendly, Should have been the first if any . Anyway all irrelevant now and at least it will hopefully boost confidence a bit before the real action next week

Leeds-live were quoted as saying "At 25, Terrier’s age is a slight cause for concern as Leeds chiefs have a “resale” policy when scouting players". A bit rich when we splashed out almost £30m for Rodrigo (then 29yo), two years ago.

We had the chance to snap up Ollie Watkins but his 'bling' lifestyle put Bielsa off.

This gaps out wide stuff that journos are quoting like they’ve unravelled the mystery of jm’s formation. It’s how his teams play and always have FFS!?

it’s like complaining about bielsa’s sides for man marking

the side plays narrow, they give up the wide spaces, the theory is the ball needs to come back in the middle at some point and you have players there to deal with it. So It looks scary but it doesn’t cough up as many clear chances as you might think. The game at palace last season was a really good example of this. Saha running amok but getting largely crowded out when getting into securing positions.

that is not going to change so get used to it guys. When it’s a disaster is:
    - when people don’t do their jobs properly -which has happened pre-season in transition but hopefully will improve as time goes by
    - when the wide players are world class… and sadly there’s a few of those in the Prem

we will get torn to shreds at times this season but we’ll be in some exciting basketball games too.

A poor offer from Newcastle seeing he now a proven goal scorer in the PL and given the loan fees on top of the the final amount we paid for him wouldn’t represent much of a profit. Wonder if we’ve shot ourselves in the foot and now seen as a club that will sell below market value if the player really wants the move.

I think we ended up shelling out near on £20m for Harrison with paying 3 loan fees and remember his price started off as £x loan fee then £8m purchase, but went to another loan fee and an increase buy of £10m, then another loan fee with an increased price of £11m which we did, so £11m plus 3 loan fees. On top of anything we get for him there is a sell on clause % to Man City

Bogusz ahead of schedule and should be back in full training next month. Marsch wants to look at him and enjoyed what he saw last season, but expect him to play a role in the U21s to get match fitness back before deciding what to do in January. Bogusz is wanted back in Ibiza and a couple of La Liga teams, also a couple of top Polish clubs

Gret to see the best of the young crop of the young lads sign up new deals means we have plenty of options for them now. As on Harrison I think only a crazy bid would prize us to selling him. One we don't want to sell or need too aswell as he's not pushing to be out. But it would be crazy at this stage to let go of him unless we have a ready replacement. I'm expecting him to be here for the near future as I don't think the Bar Codes will shell the coin to even start us playing ball.

I think it's a good move by Marsch the lad has talent and really needs to be looked at before we decide what the future holds for him.

…suspect that is the primary reason for doing it. <cheers>

5 subs rule and marsch likes to rotate, so be interesting to see how much game time they get or whether Jimmy, as doc suggests, and maybe Sam (though marsch seems to like him) are now primed for loan deals.
