Masky was never a big drinker, but would always have a pint or two of Guinness on a night out....never more! As a musician, I always wanted to be in control, and for the last few years I drink pints of water as my music pub charge £4.80 a pint! I enjoy tap water and as part of my health drive, I drink green tea only! Interestingly I have never smoked or taken drugs in my life.....or farted! Just saying! :emoticon-0103-cool: Quite a clean living guy is Masky and happy.....Morrison out!

Yes, they used to serve a pint of sarsaparilla in the type of glass depicted in Andy Capp cartoons! :emoticon-0103-cool:

Ahh Masky, I am but a wee whippersnapper who treads in the well worn footsteps of elder statesmen such as yourself in life and others on these boards :emoticon-0105-wink:

Talking of old cardiff- anyone here try the scrumpy offered by Brains in the back bars of their public houses in the 70’s?
Sampled it in the Greyhound at bottom of St Mary’s st and the Mitre in Llandaff - can still see the bits floating in the glass!
    It was lethal stuff <yikes>

Boring reply I'm afraid nin. I remember the pubs and had heard of the cider you mentioned but never sampled it. By the 70s I'd already developed my taste for Brains Dark

Developed my taste for Dark in the Britannia Hotel in Porth as a teenager in the very early 80s.
    Am still partial to it.

Was a big fan of Dark as a young lad. The RD and SA weren’t bad either plus they did a mean little bottle of IPA back then <cheers>

I would say that I have fond memories of that place but on the few occasions I visited, my memory was severely compromised by the end of the night.

My dad was born in the row of houses on the hill above the pub.

Like my dad, the Brit is no more.
Was knocked down a few years ago now.

Last time I stayed at Mam's and went out for a beer it was another watering hole of my youth. The Llwyncelyn.
Ended up drinking Guinness as they didn't have any decent beers on.

Newport had a similar house of hospitality, the New Found Out on Cambrian Road. Was probably the same cider.

The NFO was mainly frequented by tramps, n'er do wells and Argus street salesman once their shift finished. It was hard to understand them at the best of times but after a few ciders they were unintelligible.

The most famous tramp was Starky (not Sparkey) who used to grab an empty glass and go around pouring in the dregs from other glasses. Usually found passed out in a shop doorway by 9.00pm.
