Germany will be a tough nut to crack, they look strong and well organised. Really impressed with Oberdorf and Popp, should be a good game let's hope it doesn't go to a penalty shootout.

Jim Rodwell and the French coach would be a good match!

Was reading an article where UEFA are using millions, in the hundreds, to subside the womens Euros from the £1.6 billion they made from the mens Euros despite reduced capacities due to higher ticket prices and far, far more in broadcasting rights. Maybe they should charge more for the womens games as they get paid the same for representing England as the men do. Or perhaps they know the stadiums would be three quarters empty if they did?

The women’s competition costs peanuts compared to the men’s, the total price money across all competing countries is about £15m (4% of the amount paid to the men’s teams).

Yes, they get all the stadiums for free, stewarding, policing etc.<doh> They also pay an amount each week to the clubs of the players in the squads. Prize money doesn’t determine the cost difference. It was a statement from UEFA which said they were subsidising it with the profits from the mens Euros. Perhaps you should go on their site and tell them they are wrong.

That's good. They could have been doing that for years though couldn't they?

Anything and everything they can do to promote more participation in football is excellent. Think of all the young girls who'll take up the sport if we win it.

Don’t think they will have made anything on previous ones as the attendances here are far better and they are still losing money?
There are some daft statements being made on the back of the England women’s team.. There was some female in the Independent going on about the unfairness of men making so much compared to the women. And complaining the Chelsea women played in a 4,000 stadium whilst the men played in a 40,000 one. Does she think Chelsea womens crowds of less than 2,000 would look impressive in Stamford Bridge? Does she think the costs of opening up Stamford Bridge would be viable? Is even more subsidies equality nowadays?
My nieces played girls football, one was at City for a time. Granddaughter plays football and rugby union, though it is a struggle getting the numbers. Friend of mine has coached a girls team for years. Biggest obstacle is the badges you have to hold and checks you have to go through to be involved with any junior football nowadays means a lack of decent coaches. Unfortunately I feel it will be like all the kids who were going to take up all those sports after the London Olympics. Never happened long term.

I think that's a bit pessimistic (at least I hope it is). Many of those olympic sports are much harder to get into than football, you can start with just 2 or 3 having a kickaround, all you need is a ball and a bit of space. If schools embrace it a bit more there could be a noticeable uptake.

Good article by David Conn in the Guardian a few years back about coaching. In a smaller country Spain had 2,500 coaches in schools with a badge level for which we only had 2,700 in the whole of the UK. He said at the rate things were going at that time that we could catch up in about 130 years. Then there is the problem of paying for the coaches. Our schools wouldn’t want to saying it should be spent on something more diverse and inclusive etc…

Coaches in schools would be the icing on the cake in my view of things. Any half decent PE teacher should be able to help keen girls learn how to kick a ball without falling over, trap and pass etc. Then the ones who want to can progress to out of school football, assuming it's not too far away... A lady on the radio just this week was saying how many schools simply don't let girls play football. That is just wrong.

All my local ones do. Though to be fair there isn’t the greatest of interest amongst the girls at some of them.

You’re claiming to know the level of interest girls have in football at all your local schools?

You’ll be getting your hard drive checked. :police:

My daughter plays for Sunderland Women. She would be the first to tell you there is a huge level of interest in football in both primary and secondary school amongst girls in the North East.

You're kidding me, surely not? They're letting women write for newspapers? They'll be letting them wear trousers next.
