Gosling on for Kayembe. Saints starting to tire and getting sloppy - Bayo shot cleared off the line.

Full time 0-0. A clean sheet, which is not to be sniffed at. For me, Pedro and Sema were both outstanding, Asprilla looked very good, Bayo unlucky not to score.

Bodes well for the upcoming season.

    Birmingham is £20.

As is Preston but unfortunately there is a train strike.

Until the mistakes occur, he mouths off again, or Utd up their offer. Meanwhile he starts in the shop window...

The lack of goals has extended to the U23s - drew 0-0 against Hitchin tonight.

Ashley Fletcher was playing too - not going to be a good look for him then.

They'll probably be forgotten by Monday - just in time for our first match.

This is the bit that gets me - "they'll be prepared to sanction players early on in the match." I've never really understood why they are reluctant to do that - a breach of the rules is a breach of the rules, it shouldn't matter when it occurs, the free kick/penalty/yellow card/red card should be awarded there and then. I can't remember which match it was last season, but we were denied a penalty because the offence happened almost straight after kick-off - a complete nonsense. Mind you, we probably would have missed it anyway...

I presume they mean for time wasting etc which is allowed to happen till basically the last seconds of the game.

But agree with your general point - who cares if it’s “too early “.

A booking or red card is a booking etc regardless of when it is .

Fez’ll know this better than me, but some bookings are for “persistent infringement”, which means they are necessarily more likely to happen later in the game.
That said, I agree with both of you that some refs have seemingly bottled decisions because they take place early in the game, and that’s not OK. <ok>

Persistent Infringement is never used enough at professional level. I would give players 4 and have a word: "next one's a yellow, fella!" and then always act on it. After 5 fouls on the same player (lightweight tricky winger) in one match I called the captain over and told him the next one is in the book, speak to your players. Not one minute later... "but it's my first foul ref!" I make sure the Captain is nearby as I take his name.

Heiðar Helguson could've done with a bit of that on his debut vs Liverpoo when he suffered 11 fouls prior to being subbed. Kicked off the park.

A few years ago we played Norwich and had a defender sent of inside 30 seconds, we lost the game 1 - 0 and the red card was I believe recinded on appeal

Against Bournemouth I think Sarr was knocked out by an elbow in the face in the first minute and the defender was not even yellow carded because the referee thought it was too early in the game so it depends on who is fouling who when it comes to "too early in the game for a red"

Early red for Angella vs Southampton too. Another rescinded if memory serves.

I do wonder at times if we hold the record for the number of red cards reminded on appeal

I think we had five rescinded during our previous EPL relegation.
