Well we are in a minority of two then? Other than a bit of a question mark about RB, we look to have a decent defence, atm a surfeit of wingers and a pack of DMs and CMs... t The problem we have, and its usually expensive to solve...is only one striker (who is not proven in the Championship). The Broadhead saga drags on and assuming he will land at some point, I would prefer 2 more strikers. One a big strong hold-up player and the other fast and nippy in the Defoe/Phillips mould. This gives options... to play 2 up front rather than just 1.
Heard that Troy Parrott (who has also been mentioned as another striker option) is expected to join Preston on loan
I think if we can then every position should be upgraded. I suppose my sense is Stewart will be good at this level and hence not a priority to upgrade. This might be the conundrum for the club in that players know we dont need an new number, just an extra number 9. So it has to be someone who is self confident enough to think they will take Stewarts place, or a loanee whose club want him managing carefully in terms of game time. Broadhead is the obvious choice to me as we know what we get, and he knows he can perform here. Parrott wouldnt make much sense as he played 40 odd games last year, so his progression needs another season with plenty of game time. I have stated my fantasy footy choice would be Delap from Man City. I could see him really pushing Stewart and arguably getting starts on merit, which would be good for Stewart. I also reckon Man City would be delighted if he got maybe 25 appearances this season. It is that type of player profile I think will come here, after Broadhead.
PARROTT - Frustrating but likely he'll get more game time with Preston. Stewart will always start games in this system. Both Parrott and Spurs will want him playing every week. Ellis Simms would be a target for me. Broadhead carrying an injury still.
Agree with this definitely a couple of strikers full back and a big strong midfielder . I think we have skilful ball players but I think we are short of midfielders who get the dirty work done for the ball players. A proper grafter.
I don’t know a lot about Delap but his goal and assists stats look superb: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam-delap/leistungsdaten/spieler/610849/plus/0?saison=ges Admittedly, a lot are at PL2/under 23 level. What’s his style in regard to hold up play, flair, pace in behind type of thing?
So where does Gooch play, personally I dont think he is good enough to start a game in any position at this level, but I know I am in a minority, and he has some die hard supporters, what they see, completely escapes me.
How many teams who play a lone striker have an equally good striker willing to sit on the bench though? And how much would we have to spend to get a striker as good as Stewart? I’d rather spend the money on a decent central midfielder. You don’t rotate your striker every week. I think signing players like Broadhead or Parrott who can play across a few forward positions naturally is the best way to go. That way they’re always in and around the team keeping match fit and can slot in when needed. Parrott played wide of the striker on both sides last season, I find it bizarre that some of our fans are turning our noses up at him because they’ve used fotmob to check his stats and seen he only scored 8 goals.
We're fine for the first few games. Not ideal, but ok. Better to get the right players in at the end of the window than the wrong ones now
He is very quick mate, and strong. He is obviously a cracking finisher as well. He can play the link up stuff, but we might not see him dropping deep like Stewart. Very much a number 9, from the bits I have seen.
100% this. I think he is one of the best attackers we saw in league 1. Would push Roberts very hard I think.
