Agree with you Den, I missed a lot of Mortimer's comedy because Reeves was there and I wouldn't watch.
I don't get it either - I guess comedy is just another art form and, same as any other art form, it's totally subjective; I rate them as a duo right up there with the best of them.
there has, of late, been a type of comedy that does nothing at for me. i was very tempted to put the word "alleged" before comedy just then. i call it cringe comedy. it's where we're asked to laugh at socially inept people. people like coogan's alan partridge, or ricky gervaise's david brent. apparently it's fine to laugh at these unfortunates. and why don't we laugh at other unfortunates too, eh? there's a whole lorryload of people worse off than we are, so let's all laugh at them too, shall we? shal we laugh at the disabled too? shall we laugh at schoolkids that get bullied? no, i'm not having it. the people i find funny are people i LIKE. not people i pity. i saw vic and bob live one time and the stage show included someone i didn't like in their tv show and didn't like live. he was called uncle peter. he stood there shouting at the audience and bellowing "donkey" for some reason. he came over as an unfortunate. and he damn well wasn't funny on any scale i'm aware of. gervaise may well imbue some of his characters with redemptive features or actions, but i'm not going to be laughing at them before or after. cringe comedy isn't comedy. it's the same inhumane reaction visitors to bedlam embraced.
You must have hated Some Mothers Do Have ‘Em, then. And seem to have missed the point about Alan Partridge and David Brent.
As well as Reeves, Gervaise is another I find unfunny, he's so far up his own arse it's unbelievable.
perhaps i did miss a point somewhere. there was a difference between frank spencer and the others. i was backing frank spencer. i wanted him to succeed. i liked him. i couldn't find anything to like in david brent or alan partridge. if it's any help, approximately none of the 1970s sitcoms were actually funny. many were likable and engaging, almost like light-hearted soaps.i liked many of them. i didn't laugh at (m)any of them.
Subjective indeed, I'm of the opinion that Gervais is a genius of comedy. I'm also of the opinion that x either hasn't seen, or comprehended, Extras, in which Gervais totally destroys Big Brother, X Factor and reality tv in general.
i haven't. i hardly bother with tv these days. gervaise was good in oscars speech mode, i have to admit. i may have watched one of the extras episodes. it was too much like hard work. i tried an episode of mrs brown's boys once, but it was like watching a football match betweem two teams i didn't care about.
I guess you are being 'wooshed' by Gervais then! The last thing he is, imo, is "up his own arse"! But it's right, as others have said, comedy can be subjective.
Not safe anywhere nowadays. https://www.express.co.uk/news/worl...day-news-Opium-Beach-Club-police-injured-stab
Not keen He's not the only one, i found neither funny, haven't watched Extras. I liked the Two Ronnies though.
