For me one of the main culprits is Michael Essien, he's done the square root of **** all in the last 4-5 years yet he's still hailed as the best defensive midfielder in the premiership and he STILL gets included in people's "Premiership XI's" and the like, and he's done nothing.

I would list Lucas, Tiote, De Jong, Parker, Song and Fletcher as better defensive midfielders than him.

Why does he have such an inflated reputation? And who do you think is the most overrated player in the premier league?

Modric. By far. 3 goals and 3 assists lsat year and Chelsea were ready to pay 40 million for him. He's a good player, I'll give you that, but thre are plenty of midfielders in the prem who rank above him.

Did you watch the game at WHL between our two teams?
Perhaps you have to watch him on a regular basis to appreciate his talent.
He's definitely not overrated, I can assure you.

    Vidic?
Good player, but he fouls constantly.

Agree with both points there. Modric is a brilliant deep lying playmaker, he controls most games he plays in, much like Cabaye, Alonso, Xavi and Pirlo (just a few examples) do (obviously Xabi, Xavi and Pirlo are more experienced at succesful at controlling games than him at the moment but that'll come to Modric with more experience of playing centrally)

    Boswinga and Santos.

Boswinga looks like he's playing netball and Santos is a better dancer than he is a defender...

    Adel Taarabt.

Great championship player but isn't a Premier League player in my opinion.

Agreed...one trick pony (even though his one trick he is pretty good at <laugh>). Useful but hardly world class and should never have been anywhere near last years player of the year award just because he had a couple of good weeks in a row. Rooney also gets a mention as he's never ever done anything consistently at international level (other than fail miserably). Class...but not world class.

Oh and as for anyone saying Lucas he can't really be overrated as hardly anyone other than Liverpool fans ever mentions him. IMO he's been our most consistent performer for 18 months (at least).

And I think criticizing Rooney for his international football is a bit harsh. It doesn't help when the manager or the rest of the team are not great or at least performing great. Look at Messi for Argentina and he's as world class as they get.

Rooneys crap in the air ? Really ? Maybe 3 or 4 years ago but he has obviously worked hard on this and I think he is really good in the air now.

Most overrated - Walcott - pace but no footballing brain.

Do you mean Santos the Arsenal left back? Surely someone has to actually rate them for them to be overated and I don't think anyone does do they?

Joey Barton is up there for me, not entirely sure what he offers to a team apart from bad publicity and bookings, yet he's constantly playing in the Prem and is now captain!?

True - I misinterpreted the OP and just picked two players that I thought were terrible, considering their reputations.

In that case Bale - 5 good games got him the footballer of the year award and a supposedly 40 million price tag

The same could be said for Giggs when he won it as well?
