He’s a talented player but there’s a lot of red flags for pledging £30m+ and a long term deal. Especially for a team like West Ham who play one up top. Think he meshes well stylistically with Bowen but also they have historically been terrible judges of forwards so who knows.
For us, yes. For West Ham, no. They are fortunate enough that 30m isn't really a big deal to them. Last summer they spent 30m on Kurt Zouma, and another 30m on Nikola Vlasic.
For us yes £25m + £5m add ons is **** loads but for the majority of the other teams in the PL that is a pretty normal size fee. I understand why we haven’t done it this summer especially as we are obviously signing lots of players and that fee would’ve been a huge chunk of our budget on just one player. I wouldn’t say Broja is a good Pl level striker right now but all the signs are there that he could become one. You are obviously paying partly for the current player and partly for the potential
Agreed. He’s fantastic for such a young player. 30m is a decent price. I’m gutted we can’t afford that tbf. That’s the going rate for a decent PL player these days. Sums up why we barely stay in the league each season.
£30 million+ for a player that scored 6 goals in 32 games for us? I like Broja, but anymore then what we paid for Ings ( £20 million) would be too much.
Around a dozen of those games were coming on as substitute. So it's more like about 6 goals in 20 starts. Which sounds more respectable. But stats really only tell half the picture. He's a nightmare for defenders. Able to out-muscle the likes of Craig Dawson already, at such a young age. He's only going to get stronger too. Sure he has his faults (a bit on the greedy side), but with decent service - like he will get at West Ham/Chelsea, he will bang them in for fun.
I like Broja, and would be gutted if he went to West Ham for £30million. Not quite sure he stands comparison with a young Alan Shearer though. What have I missed?
I only saw Shearer a few times in a Saints shirt, so I'm happy to be told I'm wrong. But if we're going on stats alone, then Shearer wasn't all that prolific for us. I know he bagged a hat-trick on his debut, but it took him 40 more appearances to score three more.
I sure hope major decisions aren’t based on stats alone. I know it was in the championship but Armstrong had very impressive goal scoring stats. It hasn’t worked so far
Why though? Obviously we know what became of Shearer later when he left Saints. And yes, I doubt very much that Broja will become half the player. But at this stage in Broja's career, there are enough similarities between him and a 20 year old Shearer to make the comparison.
I agree. And I even criticised the reliance of stats several posts above. But they can't be ignored either.
Judging by the response today, £30m may not even be enough for Chelsea. If it’s pushing close to £40m+ then I defy anyone to say he’s shown enough to justify that. In my mind, £30-40m is too much for “potential”. You have to have a really proven track record for that. He’s shown flashes but this is still potential we’re talking about. I understand it’s inflated because his appearances so far are exclusively in the Premier League but there has to be better value out there. There must be and most seasons, there is. I just don’t see a potential world beater because he was more athletic than…34-year-old Craig Dawson. Also note that the club that got Haller for £40m (who had actually scored for fun everywhere he’d ever been) and couldn’t work out what to do with him may not be the best judge. They’ve got a comical history of signings in that position. I don’t want people to think I’m anti-Broja or that I think he’s ****. He’s fine. I just don’t think it’s an interesting deal at that price unless you’re completely desperate, out of ideas and have a massive amount of money to piss away. Maybe that actually does describe West Ham and their need for a forward so that Antonio can have his Iron Man moment, ride off into the sunset and finally be at rest.
25 million is nothing these days for PL striker really. And if it goes to 30 it presumably means he would have been a success? So think it's a pretty good deal for West Ham if that is accurate. Could easily be worth £50m in a couple years time as he has all the right attributes to go to the very top imo.
32 years old. And I said out-muscled. West Ham fans consider him their best centre-back, but whatever. I don't know. He was just an example. Broja did it to others. He's a beast at just 20.
we had a season to look at Broja. if he really wanted to be here and we really believed he had what it takes we would find the 30m. my gut feel is that he didnt love it and we didnt see enough to make him our record signing. makes sense to me.
