I'm gonna be a broken record again but it's not massively surprising. Don't get me wrong, I'd have expected Fleming to be first choice after his end to last season, but it definitely isn't as clear cut as a lot of fans have been making out, Elder isn't **** and never has been **** for us. Fleming did really well when he got in due to Elder's injury, but equally Elder did really well for two and a half years before that and it really limited the amount of games Fleming could get in that time. People are so committed to this 'Elder is ****' thing though, you can already see the basis of the narrative forming for when we lose a couple of games if he does go with Elder as first choice. It'll be purely because Fleming isn't playing like last season it was purely because of 4-3-3 whenever we lost.
It still seems to me that his issue is that he wasn't offered the same money as the new signings are on. Understandable from his point of view but also understandable that we didn't want to suddenly give big money to all of our existing stars as well as signing players, that wouldn't be sustainable. It is an awkward situation when the club suddenly has a much bigger budget. It was a shame to lose him but probably had to happen. Just hope something similar doesn't happen with Greaves.
Let’s say you work in an office or something and you’re considered one of the most popular and hard-working people in the company by your colleagues and get good feedback. You get offered a raise which doubles your annual salary, but it’s still lower than what the new hires are getting. Then another company reaches out to you on LinkedIn and offers you more money than the increase your current company is offering. I think most of us would move on in that situation too. All the best, George. Great servant of the club.
I am having trouble picturing some on here being the most popular and hardworking person in the company…
I read into it differently that it was potentially playing time as well. At 27 he probably wanted some guarantees about playing time.
Surprised as anyone when George left the club. He did a cracking job for us and was popular with the fans. Don’t know the details as to why he left nor will I speculate but the fact is Professional football is a relatively short career and players move around to suit their ability and desire. One thing for certain though is whilst Millwall have signed a very good player in Honeyman we are slowly building a squad that’s potentially a lot better than the one he left.
Good post....City and Wall might not be far from each other come the business end of the season...But which end of the table? Top, middle, bottom. Actually, in truth, I guess middle isn't an end.
You’re working on the assumption that you’re right and those that don’t rate him are wrong, we’re all perfectly capable of making our own minds up based on the performances we watch.
Time will tell. I learnt years ago never to try and predict what will happen next at Hull City. Quietly confident maybe.
I think fleming is the better player of the two and he will get better, but i agree elder was one of our better performers in league one and is still a decent player.
I find it crazy that he had a pretty similar season in terms of goals and assists to Scott Twine but if you told us all last season we could get £4/5m for him most would’ve bit their hands off.
