One of best answers I have heard in a pop quiz was when they played that and it was asked who did the original. Only one person, a young lass knew. Even after hearing it I would still have to look it up now if asked.
I'd have known the Piranhas. Not sure if anyone did it earlier. I didn't used to know until Farrow sang it to me in Kempton a "few years" back. One of those memories that sticks with you.
First done by this lot in South Africa in 1958. How the lass knew that I don’t know as she was only in her 20s and won’t have been born until a couple of decades later. M
Two remarks about songs stick with me. One was FC fans complaining Wigan had nicked their song. Turned out “their song” was about ganning along to see the FC aces. Don’t know what those other fans up north who play in black and white would have made of this. The other was when I was working in Leeds in the late 1960s. This record came on in a pub and a Leeds fans said they’ve nicked our song. Seems he thought someone had heard them singing - La La La La La La La We’re going to win the football league La La La La La…keep repeating, then gone back to America and wrote a hit song. Could only shake my head and wonder about some people.
