I think easily the best back catalogue of tracks. Especially when you take all his solo and NWA bits into account. If not already familiar you should check out MF Doom
I wouldn't say so mate but he's a character, and hes up there, I was lukewarm on some of his stuff but by the time I was listening the production in hip hop had come on huge leaps so some of it was dated, loved his track on the film Colours though KRS One would probably have that claim, or Maybe melle Mel before him and some others I'm not too knowledgeable about But Kool Herc is the pretty much the annointed godfather of rap but he was a DJ not a lyricist I mean the true godfather of rap is James brown but that's another tale
Defo man everyone should listen to DOOM once at least Or if you're not a fan of the music just read the written lyrics, the man was a genius, just extraterrestrial level thinking. Also the cover for MM FOOD is the greatest album cover ever I mean the mans career stalled after his brother died and he came back and re invented himself as hip hops supervillain, the antithesis of hip hops commercial leaning at the time, complete with metal mask and albums full of old spider man and fantastic four cartoon samples etc..if any of that sounds your bag then you won't be disappointed One of the most pro black rappers but his white Asian whatever fan base is huge He used to send out imposter DOOMBOTS to lyp sync his songs at his shows, and he would pocket the money while sat at home. I loved that I mean hence the username lol His life was such a tragedy too idk how he managed to do what he did but may he rest in peace, had to give him a good write up
It seems (as of now anyway) that the 90's was the last time we will ever see a proper music scene or indeed those kind of iconic artists. If you are into it or not those guys who built that late 80s - 90s hip hop scene were so creative and did it with drive and passion. Same with the rave scene. It doesn't feel like society is in a place anymore which provides the kind of environment where this sort of creativity thrives. It's all too easy for everyone. Im not saying that's bad by the way but it is probably bad for music.
Black culture at the time was just thriving, so many movies as well, RnB.. Basically all those artists grew up on 60s and 70s soul music and it came across completely, nowadays people grow up on rap music and then make rap music there's a massive difference in creativity as you say The scene has been diluted and bastardised and in 6o years time or sooner Eminem will be like Elvis, the king of rap. I have nothing against him but just, please no. Inevitable though it seems
This thread threw me - @Seabass when you mentioned NWA, are you thinking of Ice Cube? Ice T wasn't NWA. Ice-T's best was O.G. Original Gangster, for me. He made some weird stuff...."ever wondered what a mother***ing drill would sound like going in through the top of a mother***ers head? It sounds like this....". But Ice T was rap, rather than hip hop. Dr. Dre's the greatest rap/hip hop artist of all time, not just for personal contribution but also for production and talent spotting.
Rap is hip hop Roly mate it's one of the core elements And yeah Dr Dre is a great shout i wouldn't argue with that at all. NWA and then seminal solo work and then brought in snoop and then Eminem.. Not much matches up with that Just not the greatest rapper though as he didnt write
It's gonna be like rock, a peak, a slow burn out process with some bursts of creativity. Then a new style will move in and take over. DJs seem to be absolutely thriving right now.
Yeah defo mate, people have been saying afrobeat is the new thing for years.. it's not really my thing, I don't understand how to dance to that lol, but it looks like they are right Admittedly I don't know anything about new djs really other than some good synthwave stuff, I think that's what it's called, I was put onto
Saw him live in the late 1970’s in London and he was amazing with his singing, dancing and performing. One of my favourite live performances I’ve seen. One word to sum him up “absolutely amazing”….Okay two words to sum him up “absolutely brilliant and amazing”…right only four words to sum him up…..
That's class I would have loved to see it..i heard he was an absolute maniac too, hell of a boy like I was just checking and his one track funky drummer was sampled in everything from sinead o Connor and Depeche mode to Ice T himself, and that's just the tip of the 'iceberg' (lol) especially in relation to hip hop Godfather of soul and rap, some sort of mythical being really, he always did seem to have a glow about him I mean most of the time it was sweat tbh but still
