In the 4-2-2-2 a 10 is what I always referred to as a second row. RH has them starting wide and then moving more centrally when it comes to attacks. It offers flexibility with the overloads where the FBs can get forward and have the option of both over and underlaps. Aribo is very good for that role as he likes to carry and has a background of playing as a more central attacking midfielder. I think he’s well suited to the requirements.
I know it’s Scottish Football but that’s still very impressive and just what we need if he can do it at EPL level. Better close control than Stuey
Looks like a good fit for the system. Decent ability to win the ball back when we press and looks like he has the ability and pace to carry the ball over long distances, which are the attributes which have made Stuey so effective
At only 10m he'd have to be pretty f*cking awful for that numpty to be right. We've signed players for around that in previous seasons who don't even play.
The first thing most of my Celtic fan pals said to me was "Why buy Aribo when you can get Rogic on a free?" whilst the first thing most of my Rangers supporting pals said was "Bastard!" There's a huge amount to admire about Aribo and I paid quite close attention to him given that he (IIRC) chose Rangers over us. Whether he can produce the same levels in the PL is an unknown but if he can, the fee is a steal.
I don't take too much notice of other fans comments on us but this one doesn't really make much sense. Firstly, we haven't paid 10 million it's only 6 going up to 10 with add-ons. As I was saying to my butler just recently " what can you buy for £6 million these days?" Secondly, if he turns out to be dogshit it's hardly going to be the most embarrassing signing of the season, no-one notices what we do anyway. The winner of that title will be whoever Man U pay too much for in their next transfer. We paid around £20 million for Carrillo, now that was embarrassing. Finally, I've just had a look on a Rangers Forum and nearly all are saying he was good for them and wish him all the best. These two caught my eye; RenfrewBear72 said: £6m up front, daylight robbery for a player like Aribo. Such is life with his contract situation, all the best Joe. RFC80UK £6m to Saints is nothing. It is scandalous we’ve allowed this to happen so cheap.
Best to ignore other fans comments on signings, except the positive ones of course I always remember when we first got promoted back to the Prem and transfer fees hadn’t exploded at that point. We signed Jay Rod for £6m and Twitter went into meltdown saying what a rip off it was
Aribo is almost 26, so unless he has a worldy of a season, you’d imagine we’ll have him until he’s at least 28, at which point, if he’s really performing, some clubs might prefer to sign a younger player. I know we try and buy young to sell at a profit, but I like these kinds of signings because it usually means we have them for their peak years and don’t need to sell, a bit like we’ve had with S Armstrong.
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said: "Joe is a player with many qualities to his game, and we are very excited to welcome him to the squad in time for the pre-season trip to Austria. "We believe Joe can bring energy and creativity to our side. Feeling comfortable in so many different positions is very helpful for a manager and shows he has a high level of football intelligence, with the ability to take on new information quickly "He has played a lot of games already in his career, at a very high level, and his performances in the Europa League prove he has the quality to play in the Premier League. This is a big ambition for him, and he is hungry to show everybody he can do it." -- Joe Aribo said: "It’s an amazing club with a lot of history here, and it’s a good plan with what’s to come next. I’m really excited for the journey. "The Premier League is the best league in the world. I’ve been watching it since I was a young boy, it’s always been a goal for me to play here and show what I can do on this stage. "It’s an amazing feeling, a dream come true. This is where I’ve wanted to be since I was a child growing up playing, so to say that I’m here now is really exciting."
