I am not sure quite how much we are going to get on ITV Racing this afternoon as they will virtually only have time to show each of the eleven races, a quick word with the winning jockey/trainer and then some adverts before the next. At HQ, I am expecting Victory Dance to win the Superlative but it is little surprise that the bookies have decided that it is a three-way go between the unbeaten runners. It looks like Lion Of War is going to be left to do the donkey work as he made most last time to win an egg and spoon race on the kitty litter at Newcastle but the Appleby horse is following in the footsteps of Master Of The Seas, who started in the same race that he won on debut. Just the eight in the 2:40 but the race just seem to boil down to two form races. Bay Of Honour won on his return at Thirsk, just holding off the race fit Positive Impact (who subsequently won at Brighton) who is now 8lb better off as both make their handicap debuts. Three of today’s field contested the Britannia at the Royal meeting. Spinaround ran on the stands’ side and was first home of the four that did so but only in 18th place. He now has the services of a 5lb claimer, making him at least 5lb better off with the other two. Lawful Command ran with the majority in the centre group and finished fifth but now has another 4lb to carry whilst third home JIMI HENDRIX has risen 5lb. Although that leaves him 10lb worse with Spinaround, I think there is still more to come from the Beckett colt. Laasudood won his maiden last year when trained by Sir Michael Stoute but has switched to Richard Hannon this term. He won a four runner Doncaster handicap after chasing home an Appleby hotpot at Nottingham but is now 7lb higher – Crowley is at Ascot so Soumillon has picked a useful spare. I am bypassing the Bunbury Cup as the market is dominated by Samburu, sixth in the Jersey and now dropped in off virtually bottom weight here; and Montassib, fifth in the Buckingham Palace and from the all conquering Haggas barn. So I would not be surprised to see this go to an outsider as the race used to have that sort of reputation. The July Cup looks like a straight shootout between the generations as all the relevant form comes from two Royal Ascot sprints. Naval Crown just pipped stablemate Creative Force in the Platinum Jubilee and there will probably be little between them again. It is hard to fancy Aussie raider Artorius reversing the running (third that day) and Happy Romance, Alcohol Free, Double Or Bubble and Emaraaty Ana were all well beaten. PERFECT POWER won the Commonwealth Cup and Christophe Soumillon is back for another big pay day. Runner-up Flaming Rib re-opposes as does also-ran Twilight Jet but the Fahey colt is the best British sprinter in training and should continue in his winning ways.
Good day to you all! Heck I find this Flat racing so darn hard, not that NH is easy, but I do prefer it for betting. Quite a few of you do very well with Flat racing, e.g. Oddy (inspired lately), QMII, Stick (of course!), Pilgrim, Smokey, to mention but a few. Congratulations to all of you who manage to find winners in this very difficult part of horseracing. So, this clueless writer must keep trying! Today, a (naturally) small wager on Mountain Peak in the Class-2 Handicap 'dash' over the minimum distance at Ascot (15:00). Has pretty decent form, although not one of the more-fancied runners, is well-drawn in Stall-15, and has conditions to suit. Carries a welter 9-10 but that does not matter so much over 5f on fast ground, IMHO? Tom Marquand on board for the Ed. Walker yard. 12/1 is the best price at time of writing, generally-available. E/W, of course. The very best of luck today folks, and enjoy the racing!
Thank you very much for the mention, it seems to me that you are very generous in my case. Believe me, I hope you are right about Mountain Peak.
The bet to avoid at York is surely Winter Power in the 4:40. She won the race last year and followed up in the Nunthorpe. She is the top-rated in the race and has won three of her four races at the track – so horses for courses applies – but she has not finished in the first seven since the Nunthorpe so there is no actual form reason she should win. It would probably be better to chance the unbeaten Royal Aclaim, which beat Perfect Power on debut, won an egg and spoon race on the bit last time and receives 5lb from her elder. A very disappointing line up for the Silver Cup at York in a race where it looks like Thunderous will try to make all and Without A Fight will try to overhaul him. Given that John Leeper has been beaten by both rivals and is 3lb worse in with the favourite, he looks booked for £8,608 third unless they have a cunning plan. I spent a whopping five minutes looking at the John Smith’s Cup before deciding to leave it alone. Saaed bin Suroor has a couple with chances, The Queen’s horse has not been over-tried, Mahrajaan could have been set up for this (and Haggas loves a winner here) and, if he retains the ability of yesteryear when he won a Group 1 race, Hunt Cup runner-up Intellogent should go well for all those backing him on here, so good luck to those getting involved. The Stayers’ Handicap (2:55) looks quite intriguing. Last year’s runner up Ghadbbaan returns on a 2lb lower mark and has recorded one of only two career wins in a twelve furlong race since whilst last year’s third Flint Hill returns on a 2lb higher mark, subsequently won over 17 furlongs at Pontefract and was second in the Pontefract Cup last time. Quite a number of the field seem to have little prospect on recent form or are trying a new trip so I will discount them. Witham River ran respectably in a modest five runner race last time, has dropped 1lb in the ratings and also gains 2lb from a change of apprentice but will probably still be a maiden at 3:05. Gift Of Raaj won what effectively ended up a match in running at Doncaster last time but the 3lb higher mark would require a career best from the seven year old. Black Kalanisi, a dual code performer who won under today’s jockey at Goodwood having previously been close up twice on the kitty litter, has only been raised 2lb but the nine year old needs a career best to win. This will be DANNI CALIFORNIA’s first try at the trip and she has spent most of her career on the kitty litter. She easily won at Wetherby on her penultimate start – a form line that gives her the beating of Witham River through the runner up – and challenged too late last time over twelve at Thirsk when failing to land the odds in a weak race. She is now a further 4lb higher in the weights and Danny Tudhope has extra distance to get her going – he was aboard at Wetherby, not Thirsk.
What an immaculately turned-out fellow Christophe Soumillon is. He exudes Class with a capital 'C'. Bozo could learn a lot from him on the secrets of sartorial expertise, but it is way too late, and he will remain looking like a sack of spuds.
Hooray, bad run broken at last! Phew, but that was close on the line. Glad you were on it too, Pilgrim. Great ride by Tom Marquand.
