I don't suppose there's all that much difference really. Banter tends to be more based on mickey taking or teasing someone about something they do or like, for example. I think the lack of offensiveness relies very much on give and take between whoever is bantering and works because they are friends or have a mutual interest but can still see the humour in the cause of the banter. At the end of the day, you just sort of get a feel for it.

There. That was clear as mud, wasn't it? :)

I think joking is just what one person does. Banter is basically give and take. You can't really have banter without it coming back at you...

    That's what I think anyway

Rule 1 - Women canot perform the act of banter, any female that does attempt this must be ridiculed and indeed have banter performed upon her. Women do not have bad banter, women have NO banter.

Rule 2 - Any Indian accent is banter, and should be rewarded respectively.

Rule 3 - Any form of 'Song & Dance' is also banter and anyone veiwing MUST join in, or face ridiculement.

Rule 4 - Banter can be performed by anyone of any age. Nobody has the right to jeapordize someones chances of performing banter.

Rule 5 - Banter is a sport! It is for the Middle and Upper classes of society ONLY. Terms such as 'MILF' and 'Your mum' are (after scrutinised revision) classified as banter, but this genre of banter is 'low class' banter and other more respectable methods of banter are encouraged more.

Rule 6 - The throwing of any object is NOT classified as banter, no matter how comical either the object or indeed the person is.

Rule 7 - Banter should be encouraged among the younger generations as they will form the basis for future banter.

Rule 8 (MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF ALL) - Any impression of anyone is classified as banter, no matter how bad the impression is. It should be rewarded by any form of laughter. Anyone failing to memorize this rule by heart is not a true 'banterer'.

Rule 9 - Banter should have the power to 'cheer anyone up'. If it does not, it is not banter and is merely classed as 'mild humour'.

Rule 10 - For banter to commence, there should (preferably) be a mixture of races around. This provides a larger, more fufilling range of banter opportunities. Banter WILL grow old if it is only a select group who perform it.

Rule 11 - There is, and never will be, a 'founder' of banter. The only thing there ever will be is 'true legends' produced as a result of banter.

Rule 12 - The use of iPods/MP3 Players during banter, is strictly prohibited. One cannot claim he was participating in banter if he/she was using an iPod or other forms of MP3 players.

Banterman is a bad example of banter, as are Richard Keys and Andy Gray.
