Religion and science can coexist, they are very similar in a lot of ways. I'm a great believer in empirical verification, and if someone showed me something that proved God didn't exist I would believe them in a heartbeat. Religion asks the questions, science gives the answers.
true but as i said why wait for specific days to buy presents etc? and technically every birthday brings you closer to death, whats to celebrate?
many people who don't believe in God celebrate Christmas - AND respect those people who DO believe. My original question was directed at athiests - especially those that have come onto GC to disrespect people who do believe in God. - surely you can't really expect to have it both ways ?
I disagree with this to a degree people have certainly tried this, but its up to a christian to seperate the fact from the myth and depending on some of the cultural elements, jewish culture played a huge part also most things go back to worship of some sort, the sun the moon etc. loosely interpreted it was a diety of sorts
You're not getting my point. Before Christianity had taken it and used it as their day of worshipping the birth of Jesus, it was on the Winter Solstice, not a fixed date such as the 25th. When it was taken in by Christianity and the Christian Calendar was adopted, that was when it was put on the 25th December.
We celebrate the special day that they entered the World, your culture dictates that you are not special and your birthday is meaningless, odd?
The thing is, it doesn't matter what it's taken over from. It was based then partly to take emphasis away from Roman and Pagan festivals, but partly to give followers at least one celebration of life and new birth in the most depressing point of the calendar year. If an atheist wanted to celebrate 'traditional' Christmas with the family, don't name it after the son of God who they don't believe exists!
Well, a general view is that life begins at some point before the actual birth, so why don't you celebrate, say, the date of conception?
Is there anything particularly wrong with atheists acknowledging or even celebrating those days that may have a religious significance for believers? Who says that atheists canât admire (the idea of) Jesus or the ideas and/or moralities he represents? A failure to buy into the supernatural religious element in no way precludes the unbeliever (in specifically organised religion) from an admiration and/or coincidental adherence to many of the values espoused by Jesus. And it might be argued, of course, that without the dogma of religion, these moralities may be viewed as being purer, more selfless, as they are followed and loved without any expectation of reward in the hereafter or the fear of being watched and judged in the present. Lots to celebrate there. Iâll have an iPad, please, baby Jesus. Fankoo.
There is no fact in religious book. It's all stories that you are supposed to believe, it's all myth.
I do understand that bit, i just domt necessarily agree it was that order. However that is by the by What I am saying is that winter solistice is no longer on the 25th of december, hasnt been for a long time so the hypocrites need to let that go
We have the day off every year so if you have kids we celebrate on the 25th, it is called Christmas day ,even if i don t believe in Jesus or God i would be a proper **** to rename the day ........... I celebrate chinese new year in February but it doesn t make me Chinese.....Firecrackers Dragons and noodles, top day
We celebrate certain points, including the birth. But the islamic calender is based on the lunar months, therefore the date changes eg when my kids were born i bought presents for my family inc parents etc and gave out sweetmeats/sweets to people in the neighbourhood etc
