It still has a decent meaning behind it, religious or not because it brings people together for one day a year at the very least. Just because it's religious intentions aren't the forefront of the idea of Christmas, doesn't mean people can't celebrate it.
You are very confused. The point is that it may well be on the same day as a Christian festival, but it has become something else (i.e People care more for pancakes than the Son of God). Just because it has continued on the same day doesn't mean a thing.
in itself your family's ' celebration ' is NOT hypocritical per se - but why choose to do it on the same day as one of the most significant religious feasts. - that could be considered the hypocritical bit - unless, of course you do the same at other times of the year ( and I'm not talking about birthdays, anniversaries or weddings - and obviously not christenings)
By the point it was put on a fixed date, Christianity had already taken it in and used it as its own.
what? the whole notion of christmas is based on christianity, get together, be nice to one another, etc why not do this all the time, why use 25th of december? hypocricy at it max imo
That was my point. It's not seen as a Christian thing any more, is it? People make and eat pancakes, for the most part. It's not a religious day for most.
No, Shrove Tuesday is a Christian festival, pancakes were made traditionally because they had fattening things like egg, butter and sugar in, that you weren't supposed to eat during a fast. (again)
Its the one day where everyone is off school or work, i am not a Christian but enjoy giving my kids gifts and having a massive dinner with my family..... Nobody mentions Jeebus ,but we enjoy the event
I agree, it is a difficult subject, but science tries to give answers, whereas religion is 'believing' in something that may not even exist. If god exists then why can't he/she not show his/herself? Religion is giving humans hope of going to a place in the sky called heaven, the only time you will know if heaven, god, jesus exists, is when you die, but when you die you can't exactly come back to life and tell everyone it's not there. Guess that's why the universe and so on is so fascinating.
Christmas has become a time for families to get together, and celebrate their own existence. Not to celebrate the birth of some imaginary idol, that had magical abilities to turn bread into wine and feed thousands of people with a couple of fish and a loaf from Tesco's. Futhermore if god is real how the **** did he allow Muslims to exist, or does he not have control of the devil that it is.
i wouldnt be too sure of that as I said winter solstice hasnt been on the 25th of december for a long time these things were not based on dates as such, they were based on seasons. by adding'subtracting months/days doesnt change the seasons
