The Unions put the last nail in the coffin of the British Car Industry in the late 70s. Rail travel in this country is far too expensive because the systems can't be changed. The Docklands Light Railway runs just fine with no drivers so it's been proved to be possible but they can't do it. You say it's a tough job to sit in a cab and push a lever forward but the majority of accidents are down to driver error. It's a job you can easily automate. No shifts, no pay, no pension, no breaks and no strikes. It will happen, just as it has in the car industry, and I hope it's soon but I doubt rail travel will get any cheaper because they'll just make bigger profits.
hopefully some of the "eco-migrants" will have done some of the jobs that need filling not just on the railways......i mean surely they are not all coming just for the benefits........there seems plenty of males that could at least pick fruit,tidy the streets etc they can't all be engineers,scientists etc
