Things have changed since the 70's the Unions can't just throw their toys out of the pram and call a strike. They have had six months of negotiations where the Railways management have not budged on their stance, the RMT had to give two weeks notice of their intention to ballot their members on strike action, after two weeks the ballot papers were sent out and four weeks later the result showed the members favoured strike action by 7/1, there is a few days inbetween before the RMT issued their course of action having to give two weeks notice. At anytime the Railway bosses could had reached some sort of settlement with the RMT but they chose not too, treating their staff and more importantly their customers with contempt. Looking to point the finger of blame? blame the millionaire bosses not the workers.

Matter of interpretation surely a refusal to discuss and agree modernisation which would result in some redundancy is the same as saying we will not accept any job loses which is like saying we want jobs for life
With every industry job losses are incurred with modernisation and that is accepted by the Unions, it is how they go about it is what needs to be agreed.While bosses pocket bonuses bigger then three workers wages on top of the obscene wages they pull telling them 2% plus loads of strings attached is the best on the table sort of grates on you a little.

RMT does have some members who are drivers but broadly represent train and rail workers in general (you know it's not just the driver that keeps trains running right ?). It is 2% with a further 1% if a multitude of strings which means job cuts and a loss of wages for those that remain, no one would agree to that. The spin doctors are spinning alright and you are lapping it up. A straight 4% and a sensible way forward in regards to natural wastage and voluntary redundancies would probably be closer to reaching a agreement.
