Grant Shapps should tell the railway companies to give RMT strikers a ten per cent pay rise. Grant Shapps should then put train fares up by ten per cent to pay the RMT workers. The poorest workers, earning less than RMT strikers, will have to stop using trains. If the public back the railway workers’ cause then they will continue to use more expensive trains. If the public do not back the railway workers’ cause they will switch to other modes of transport. As the number of people using trains falls then services will be cut and railway workers will be made redundant. Communist Bob Crow’s replacement Mick Lynch will have no cause to complain – fewer union members but on higher pay.
