But some more than others, mate. I don’t know which is worse; the exhaust fumes from road traffic which stay mostly just above ground level, or that from aircraft which falls from above cloaking us and everything we eat.
I’m with you on this one Rooch. The example you’ve quoted is progress for the new owner at a huge cost to the farm workers and society. Greed again. Years ago if a business made a profit year by year it was successful. These days if a business makes an INCREASED profit year by year it is successful, but just “a profit” is not enough. Bigger firms are swallowing the smaller firms, then foreign firms are swallowing them, then international conglomerates are swallowing them. We are approaching a nightmare where a handful of businesses own everything and then can charge what they like, pick and choose whoever they sell to. I’m not a business man, in fact I know nothing about business. My view is that of a layman. I’d be interested in the comments of the brainboxes on here.
When I was a kid we had the only phone in the village and people would come in to use the phone then pay me Mam. They'd ring sons and daughters in Australia, etc, who'd emigrated and would probably never be seen again ... ... people in 1960's pit villages weren't big travellers.
Couldn't put it better myself. I remember seeing a news report 2 years ago as the first lockdown eased and they were allowing people to travel and seeing a young lass (early to mid 20s) ranting that it was her right to go abroad on holiday and why should she be restricted from going or having to isolate when she came back. Sorry but a holiday abroad isn't a right, its a privilege. Your life is not going to be seriously impinged just because you can't fly to Majorca, get pissed, shag about and sleep your hangover off on a beach. And if you can't afford it, don't. It won't break you and if it means saving up to go next year or later, fine. You'll probably enjoy it more then.
I don’t think they are but then again if I never left England again in my life I wouldn’t care. Plenty of beautiful places to go in this country if you want to get away for a week.
This is the sort of person who uses the phrase “ my right” who I want to ask , in her case, on what page of the human rights book does it talk about a persons right to have a holiday , specifically in a certain location ?
Exhaust fumes differ in particle size, smaller the particle size the further they get inside our bodies, Lungs. Carbon monoxide won't penetrate as deep as Nox, but both are carcinogenic. Much of the pollutants are deal with by the catalyst to good effect and research is on going.
mate told me once if you trace all the big business owners back through the various names that get used and companies who represent other people, you basically come down to the same few people at the top of the tree, the Bildaberg group apparently...now like yourself i make no claims to understand how it all works but when a 'select few' appear to have control of all commodities then personally i feel it is time to worry.
I enjoy a good rant. The drink ones piss me off the most, the "I've earned this", photo of a glass of wine, at half 6.... on a Tuesday, no love, you're an alcoholic. Smug mentioned Skyp, Zoom etc, the sale of books must have went through the roof with the amount of people setting up their "office" with the library behind them. Sorry, wrong thread, but everything these days has the word "Drink" attached.
I haven't read through the posts but surely F1 must be the worst sport by a mile for the environment. They fly all over the world and then there are the emissions of the race cars themselves. It's a good spectacle but changes need to be made in the near future. Apparently they are looking at doing zones of the world together to save crisscrossing from one side of the world to the other all the time.
My parents bought the first melamine table in the street and everyone came to see it, and commented on how easy it was to wipe, a load of friends came round to watch us burn the old pine farmhouse kitchen table in the garden.I would imagine you would pay £3000 for that table now the melamine one fell to bits in about 6 months.
I doubt I'll ever leave the UK again or renew my passport. I wouldn't mind seeing more of the world but I'm becoming increasingly concerned that I'm ruining it. In any case, every tourist attraction is overrun with tourists recording the scene, on their phone, so they can watch it later. To be honest you'd be better off getting a DVD of the Taj Mahal than going there. I don't understand why people want to drive for hours to see Ayers Rock for example ... ... they know exactly what it'll look like before they set off.
But what would the Royal family do with their time if they weren't jetting round the world waving at peasants?
Ah yes, and with the advent of "levelling up" in just a few short years they can visit them in their workhouses.
"Travel and change of place impart new vigour to the mind" as Seneca said. But as G. K. Chesterton said "They say travel broadens the mind, but you must have the mind".
