If he thinks he is so low on the pecking order he won't start games next season then he's an idiot. But he clearly wouldn't be thinking that, which is the entire point I was making. The notion that he's rejected a deal because we're bringing in good players seems silly to me.

Lets just see what the outcome to any negotiations are.

I doubt he'll go anywhere this window unless a decent fee comes in regardless.

Maybe George is just biding his time? Waiting to see what incoming players are on and seeing how big the pot of cash actually is?
Would you rush to sign a contract for say, £10k/week when you could just wait and push for £15/20k/week like any potential signings may be on?

*Note- all figures are just an example before any of you ask “Where have you got £10/15/20k per week from”…

It's a negotiation, with both parties not in a rush to push matters at this stage. George will be taking his agent's advice, and probably, as you say, waiting to see if he is a regular starter or not, and maybe wait until Xmas to decide one way or the other.

Does anyone know whether he has had surgery on his shoulder, which constantly seemed to be troubling him last season?

I’d simply replied to this statement you made “If he doesn't have the confidence to back himself to win a starting position in the side then he's a pretty poorexcuse for a professional footballer.”
I think it’s ridiculous to say that any professional footballer who is realistic about their likelihood of having a starting position in the team are a ‘poor excuse’ for a professional.
There must be players doing an important job for clubs round the world who recognise that they are unlikely to start regularly given other players in the squad. I’m sure that doesn’t stop them trying their best in training and when they do get a chance on the pitch, and actually clubs will have signed them knowing that likelihood too and did so happily.
I didn’t say I think Honeyman has turned down a contract because he doesn’t think he can get in the team at all, I’d be amazed at that, but if, at some time in the future, he finds himself signing a contract knowing the due to his age or other players in the squad he is unlikely to start but might get a few games here and there and keeps earning a salary that benefits his family then good luck to him. I think if that did ever occur, then to disparage him as being a ‘poor excuse for a professional’ because of that would be incredibly unfair and in my opinion ridiculous.

I think you've entirely misinterpreted the point of my comment but not particularly interested in yet another of these with you Den. As you acknowledged in a previous post, you agreed with my point and let's just leave it at that?

As you say I agree with some points you make and say so, I disagree with others and say so.
I replied to one standalone comment, and I fundamentally disagree with it still as I don’t think it requires any interpreting, you were very clear.
Personally I hope that Honeyman signs a new contract, we also sign players so good that he has a real challenge getting on the pitch, you have a very pleasant day and win the Aussie lottery, my newly evicted to seats are good ones and that Acun hurries up and tells me what time he’s flying me on holiday.
It is just one statement I disagree with that’s all, nothing to be worried about.
    Have a good day

George knows he is contracted for another year. Does he feel he needs to make a decision now, if what has been offered he feels maybe with negotiation can get better? I suspect he might wait until Xmas, he then has time to access the situation, is he getting a regular game, is the team doing well, all these things I am sure he will be taking into account.

From the club's point of view, he is contracted for a year, and they have offered him what they feel is a fair offer. I think they will leave it on the table, and see what happens. They can then decide whether to offer him a better deal, or a take it or leave it offer, or sell.

George needs to decide, play hardball and risk in the present climate possibly losing out, or accept and have the security for another 2 or 3 years? I guess a lot will depend on what other options his agent has up their sleeve.

    Absolutely
Also in the unlikely event we were flying high at the top of the league at Christmas and he was playing every game but with better players around him benefitting from his game then he’d be worth a few more quid then I’d say.
Nothing to worry about, and partly because from what I’ve seen he seems like a model professional who will give his all regardless

I guess it's just funny as I recall when the one year options were triggered people said it was to finalise negotiations on new deals, now it's 'oh well they might just wait another 6 months'. A year option on his existing deal would be on quite a low base, I daresay players would be happier to negotiate a new deal now on potentially twice their last deal rather than gamble on where they may be in 6 months..

Sunderland may be trying to get him back. From what I've seen of them this last season, they desperately need some more quality

These one year options were a disgrace done by the Allams and made players unhappy and disgruntled but now perfectly fine

Perfectly fine as we are aiming for Premier League. :bandit:
Half the players we haven't signed yet will be leaving if we achieve that.

I, for one, would love to see Honeyman sign a new contract as he was probably our best midfielder for the last two seasons and we know he can play at Championship level. I am a little concerned that a team full of new foreign imports may take some time to settle or gel and very rarely do all signings come good. We should expect some duds along the way. As always, TWT.

We need some for continuity, if we don’t next season will most likely be a large disappointment. Players like Honeyman are managers dreams and he deserves to be rewarded for his last 2 seasons, I’ll be worried if he is let go.

Hes our best midfielder until a new signing proves otherwise and he should be treated as such.

It would hardly be the first time a player has rejected a clubs initial offer ahead of a transfer window where there's money in the pot, would it?

Chelsea looking elsewhere with regards to a goalkeeper - Baxter allowed to leave?
