Macca was solid enough last season and this new lad looks like a real talent, i'm satisfied that this will turn out to be a good deal for us.
I think you could argue that the jump is easier for a GK than any other position. What he will have to quickly get used to is shouting at PL defenders and ejecting the confidence to boss them around a little
It is encouraging that he is so well thought of and that City tried to keep him (lile Chelsea did with Tino). Hope the buy back is nice and healthy like Tino's too.
Now I get it. Keep Macca as our number one so we can sign a top young talent who can come in knowing that the number one finished last season in less than stellar form. This will be a good signing for us, maybe not from GW1 but before too long.
Hopefully this potential deal mirrors last season, when Saints signed Tino on a permanenttransfer , and Broja on loan.
Baz-u nu nu nu Signed for Saints and left Pompey Baz-u nu nu nu He's our Irish number two To the left To the right Saving strikers' shots all night He's alright Macca's sh!te He'll be starting overnight I'll get the song sheets printed in the morning.
Agree with the overall sentiment that we need to sign a number one, not a youngster in such a vital position. But hopefully he is a young star
The issue with signing a number one is that goalkeepers are hideously volatile. Pope's the only player on the market that I can think of who has been a number one for an extended period without being dropped, and he had his downturns in form...it's just that his backups in 2020-21 were so atrocious that it would be nearly impossible for him to lose the job. Dragowski was available because he lost the starting role at Fiorentina, and never regained it; is he more of a number one than Bazunu because he spent two years as a top-flight every-match keeper (before losing the job and picking up as many red cards as clean sheets this past year)? Bazunu might not be ready, but he's well-regarded, has played at the international level in World Cup qualifying, and generally is more experienced than your average 20 year old. Yes, Gunn flopped, but so did Forster for years, who was an experienced number one with Champions League credentials. So did Joe Hart, who went from being a world class keeper to an inert lump within two years. I'd rather have a player with the talent than the resume, if I'm being honest.
Feeling positive about this. We weren’t going to lure Schmeichel or Lloris to St Mary’s were we, so it was either going to be a relatively untried but well regarded youngster, or the Shaktar Donetsk keeper, whoever he is. Not sure what those demanding a proven upgrade on Alex - who is PL standard but not outstanding at this level - were expecting. Perhaps we could have got Jordan Pickford, who remains strangely underrated, but unlikely tbh.
Is he good on the ball? Watched a nice video of him throwing himself about in an athletic manner, but a keeper who can pass accurately would be a huge leap up on Forster/McCarthy. I’m hopeful that because of his age and keepers being coached more on this aspect of the game in recent years and not just “kick it as hard as you can” He will be pretty competent
I hope he can still kick it as hard as he can when required, because it took years off my life last season watching us categorically fail to play it out from the back time after time.
Skate newspaper article says he is. https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/...e-to-southampton-from-manchester-city-3725136
Let’s hope it’s so good that he can bypass our defence and midfield with one throw. Although with our strikers, maybe we need a keeper who can just lobs balls directly at the opposition goal. Better chance of scoring that way.
