"I just have to go and play. I want to leave Spurs now, that's clear. Whether it is important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That is not even a top priority. Although it would be nice. What is important, is that I will play." Suffice to say I don't think Steven Bergwijn will be here come September...
Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo who covers Toon, Sunderland and Boro news reckons we’re leading the race for Spence and that Forest are already looking for alternatives to sign now that it looks unlikely they’ll be able to land Spence permanently.
I can understand his frustrations. He is a good player and he needs a regular run in a a team rather than cameos. It just didn’t work out at Spurs. But I still don’t believe he has done enough to enhance his value.
Spurs will not be breaking even on a Bergwijn transfer to Ajax. For starters their league is not bloated with cash to the extent that the PL is. So pragma over dogma (accept the loss but not p*ss-take offers) .
He’s a good player but he’s brittle, physically and mentally. Lots of little injuries and he rarely looks like trusts his body. Not always looking up for it. When he does, he looks a player, but too often he plays and he’s just there. Sess was similar for ages but finally put together a run at the end of the season - maybe with gametime Bergwijn would have showed similar but while he’s a good player, he’s not displacing Son or Kulu during a crucial run-in, and that’s really the crux of it.
I think we could probably get £20m for Bergwijn and I’d say that’s a fair price. Not worth more than we bought him for but not been bad enough to take a substantial loss. Good player but Son (and Kulu) are in a different league at the moment so isn’t going to get the level of game time he’d like. The only thing I’d say in his favour is that Conte should’ve utilised him a lot more from the bench, too many times Lucas got on before him and done almost nothing and it was unfair that Bergwijn didn’t get similar minutes, especially after his form during the international breaks.
We should swap Bergwijn for Antony Either loan back the latter for the season or make the transfer trigger in a year. No point in putting a discount on Bergwijn just to suit his preferred destination.
We never see players like Bergwijn properly because you cannot expect a player to develop in a team with 10 or 20 minute appearances. Trouble is nobody can wait in the PL for a player to find his true potential unless the team happens to be short in a suitable position. The recent example is Doherty who looked like a complete disaster signing with all of us happy to see the back of him. Then Conte comes along and the player is transformed into someone who we all felt was a huge loss when he was crocked by Gerrard's animal tactics. Zouma gets fined and community service for kicking a cat but nothing for Gerrard who organised a team to kick people. As Greavsie would say, it's a funny old game. It's a funny old world as well.
More journos have jumped on the Spence story today, one of them being Ally Gold. Basically all on a similar wavelength in that we’ve either made a bid or are the front runner of a list of interested clubs.
Southampton are interested in bringing Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks to St Mary’s this summer. The 26-year-old is thought to be up for sale, giving the Saints an opportunity to sign him if they can agree a fee with their Premier League rivals. @Dier Hard
Bale back for a 3rd spell playing in front of a sold out Tottenham Hotspur stadium in the CL needs to happen
The crucial thing with Bale will be if Conte is prepared to be flexible around the management of the player. His pre-seasons are famously brutal and he demands a lot on and off the pitch physically. Bale’s body may simply not be able to keep up - he’s not an Ivan Perisic where he’s in his 30s and playing 40 or more games a season still. It may be that Conte just isn’t interested in a player who can’t cope with that. Personally I think it would be great to have him on his own physical program and use him wisely in enough games to keep him in shape for the World Cup but I know Ali Gold reckons Conte and Paratici aren’t head over heels to get Bale in and while I’d love to see it, I can kind of see why.
